Overview

Build your own high output professional subwoofer with our 18" pro subwoofer kit. Dayton Audio's powerful but lightweight PN470-8 18" driver paired up with a rugged 4.6 cubic foot knock-down enclosure allows for output levels up to 127 dB (at 1m) with low frequency extension down to 29 Hz. With a 4" inside/outside voice coil and extensive venting the Dayton Audio PN470-8 18" can handle up to 800 watts RMS and 1,600 watts peak to deliver continuous high output with incredible impact. The unique knock-down cabinet uses all high quality 3/4" Russian birch plywood that has been precision CNC cut with dadoed and/or double rabbeted joints for easy assembly and solid construction that can withstand the use and abuse of the pro sound environment. This DIY subwoofer kit is designed to deliver copious amounts of bass on demand.

System specifications: • Power handling: 800 watts RMS/1,600 watts peak • Frequency response: 29 – 800 Hz (recommended response 29 – 175 Hz, -10 dB @ 29 Hz) • Maximum SPL (1 meter): 127 dB continuous/130 peak • Recommended subsonic filter: 29 Hz high pass @ 18 dB/octave • Weight: 74.2 lbs.

About the Driver

Dayton Audio left no boxes unchecked on the PN470-8 woofer. It features high power handling, 4" inner and outer wound voice coil, glass fiber former, powerful FEA optimized Neodymium motor, ribbed paper cone, and a copper cap on top of the extended pole piece. Thanks to the lightweight motor assembly, the PN470-8 weighs in at only 16.5 lbs, 30% to 50% lighter than a comparable ferrite driver, making it "Roadie approved" and perfect for mobile DJs and portable PA systems. The PN470-8 is an ideal driver for any high output 2-way and 3-way speaker systems, bass bins, or horn loaded designs.

The lightweight but powerful neodymium motor assembly on the PN470-8 has been FEA optimized to provide a combination of low distortion and high efficiency. With the large neodymium magnet mounted inside the voice coil nearly all of the magnetic strength is concentrated into the magnetic gap providing up to 40% better utilization than conventional motor designs. The extended pole piece includes a large copper cap helping to lower distortion and linearize inductance.

To stand up to the use and abuse of the professional sound environment Dayton Audio made sure the PN470-8 can take a beating. The cast aluminum frame uses 8 wide spokes to firmly support the motor assembly, and the thick mounting flange is reinforced to create an incredibly solid mounting surface. The cone, constructed of thick paper for a natural response, includes glass fiber reinforcement and uses a ribbed design offering additional structural support. Supporting the cone is a heavy spider with integrated silver tinsel leads and triple roll treated cloth surround, both designed for high excursion applications allowing the PN470-8 to handle short bursts of excessive power without damage.

Along with high efficiency, you need a lot of power to achieve extreme SPL levels. Capable of handling up to 800 watts RMS and 1,600 watt peaks, the PN470-8 can take the heat. The 4" voice coil uses a vented fiberglass former with an inside/outside winding configuration which doubles the coil's exposed surface area for improved heat dissipation. The motor assembly includes a large pole vent along with 8 large peripheral vents in the voice coil gap to keep fresh air moving across the coil keeping temperature at a minimum. Finally, the frame has venting behind the spider with integrated heatsinks removing as much heat as possible from the sensitive motor and voice coil.

Driver specifications: • Power handling: 800 watts RMS/1,600 watts max • VCdia: 4" • Impedance: 8 ohms • Fs: 31.6 Hz • Sensitivity: 97.1 dB 2.83V/1m • Vas: 8.91 ft³ • Qms: 9.29 • Qes: 0.35 • Qts: 0.34 • Xmax: 6.5 mm • Dimensions: Overall diameter: 18-5/16", Cutout diameter: 16-3/4", Depth: 8-1/8" • Weight: 16.5 lbs.

About the Cabinet

With this 18" knock-down subwoofer cabinet anyone can build a high output professional subwoofer with absolute minimal tools. Using all 13-ply 3/4" Baltic birch panels which have been CNC-cut, this enclosure is extremely rugged and solid. All of the joints use double rabbets or dadoes to increase glue surface area and ensure easy alignment. With a 16-3/4" driver cutout and a 35 Hz tuning frequency, this enclosure is compatible with most professional subwoofer drivers. With a simple bracing arrangement and corner mounted ports, this enclosure is extremely rigid while keeping weight to a minimum. Includes CNC-cut plywood knock-down panels and wood screws, assembly instructions are available for download in the "Manuals & Resources" section.

Cabinet specifications: • Internal volume: 4.6 cubic feet • Tuning frequency: 35 Hz • Driver cutout: 16-3/4" • Outside dimensions: 25-1/2" H x 20-1/2" W x 20-1/2" D • Weight: 57.5 lb
