Dayton Audio RS1200K 12" Reference Series 500 Watt Subwoofer Kit

Explore the fundamentals of low-frequency reproduction. Dayton Reference Series loudspeakers have gained an enormous following and respect among speaker builders and audiophiles. After listening to an assembled RS1200 kit, it's easy to hear why! The system is built around the popular and powerful 12" RSS315HF-4 subwoofer, combined with the Dayton SPA500 subwoofer amplifier—one of the most technologically advanced sub amps available. Even in the most demanding application, this designed and engineered in the U.S.A. system delivers high-excursion sub-bass uncolored by extraneous resonances or mechanical noise. Dayton Audio's low-distortion Reference Series driver produces deep, musical low frequency output with maximum fidelity, even when called upon to recreate the explosive dynamics demanded by realistic home theater playback. The 500 watt onboard amplifier provides the horsepower needed for optimum performance in any room environment. Of course, the Dayton Reference Series RS1200 kit will save you money, but the best part is being able to say to your family and friends, "I did it myself!" Also available fully assembled.

Specifications: • 12" subwoofer • 500 watt amplifier • Frequency range: 25 - 180 Hz • Adjustable 40 - 180 Hz low-pass filter • LFE and line-level inputs • Auto-on • Dimensions: 17" H x 17" W x 17-1/4" D.

The RS1200 kit is a plug-and-play package that contains all necessary hardware, and requires about an hour's time along with basic assembly skills. The enclosure is pre-drilled and cut for the amplifier and driver, and pre-finished in a durable textured matte black enamel. Floor spikes are included.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly as claimedBought to round out sound from Polk Audio S6's on Technics SU-V75 receiver from 1993 custom built into closed space under stairwell in cathedral ceiling living room. The S6's angle out, and I was skeptical of this arrangement when I bought the house. But I get the "holographic effects" that S6 reviewers talked about in the '90s. But S6 mains don't reach low enough, and I just had to find out what a subwoofer would do. Came across a Dayton brochure for subwoofers. The word "reference" drew me in, because I need the sub for music only -- no home theatre. Found that the speaker is used a lot by custom builders in Europe where they have great subs to choose from. That they go with the RSS315HF means it competes. The controls of the SPA500 amp also looked like they would be able to get the sub to blend in to the existing system.Parts: amp and subwoofer exude quality (and weight -- the magnet alone is about 10 lbs, amp 15 lbs)Build: Cabinet well made and all parts fit well. Beautiful grille cloth. The black chrome spike feet are just what it needs to anchor it -- this is the real (audiophile) way.Result: Here's what Dayton says of the kit: "Dayton Audio's low-distortion ReferenceSeries driver produces deep, musical low frequency output with maximum fidelity.."That's exactly what I got. And it took all of a few minutes to get the low pass gainand freq controls to blend the sub with the S6's -- the only tools you need are your ears. I'll leave tweaking with the parametric EQ for another time. Right now I'm fine going through my music library and hearing what I was missing. And the look is elegantly simple.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Product!I bought this 500 Watt Subwoofer kit a couple of months ago. It was easy to put together, looked great when complete, and sounds even better! I used M77 spray glue to attach the foam and that worked very well. One note. I did have to take the plate amplifier cover off and reconnect a wire to the circuit board. When I first assembled this product and plugged it in, I had power but no sound. I was hoping it was a simple fix and when I removed the cover on the amp. I quickly noticed the unconnected wire. If you experience a similar issue, I would recommend starting with this!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice subwooferNo problem with the assembly. I am slow. Probably took me 3 hours total. Unlike some other reviewers, my kit had good finish. The foam cushioning seems fine. Cabinet is heavy and seems solid.I have a moderate hum also that I need to track down. Kind of annoying, but probably not the plate amps fault: I have 3 game systems, a cable box, and a computerall connected to my Denon receiver, so no telling what is going on there.I use this for home theater plus some music (classic rock) in a mid-sized (13' x 15') finished basement room with carpeting and a couple of couches . My mains are Zaph Audio ZA5.2 (Love Zaph's designs!). They have surprisingly good bass for a 5". The Denon Audyssey room equalizer gave me a 60Hz crossover for the woofer.Overall, quite happy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from RS1200 12" subReally enjoyed putting the sub together. Everything went as planned. Used hot glue to attach foam, worked well. Sounds good, way tighter than a bandpass sub that I have. Control flexibility is good especially with the parametric adjustment. Two criticisms, Perhaps should add additional bracing, box vibrates noticebly, I may take apart and add bracing. Second, I found out about the notch filter by reading about the developement of this kit. I believe that using the filter lowers and flattens the subs response but at the cost of amp headroom. According to the kit developer, the sub can be adjusted to be -3@25hz, I set mine this way, notch filter enabled, eq boosted @25hz, sounds great, but amp clips quickly with sub 30hz signals. I use this sub for music only and am happy with it. Very heavy~80lbs, so assemble close to where you will use it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty goodThe amp and driver are great, would like to have seen a better enclosure. The enclosure seems cheap and easily scratched surface. For this price I feel it should have a better outside surface on the enclosure. The internal foam included is not the best and would like to see a better quality included.

Dayton Audio RS1200K 12" Reference Series 500 Watt Subwoofer Kit

Want to build subwoofer kit like this, but instead use a cherry cabinet (302-841). Could a PE tech reply with the parts list needed to do this? I'm wondering just how much more expensive it will be to duplicate the kit with separate parts.

Asked by: TomE
The part numbers for this kit without the box are as follows.:240-715, 260-400,260-526 (qty 4), 260-776, 295-464, 300-807.

would it help to stiffen it up by wrapping the included enclosure with another layer of MDF?

Asked by: Mikekenzo
In my opinion this would not be practical. These cabinets are plenty 'stiff' as-is but if you wanted to improve upon that, adding bracing to the inside would be easier and much more beneficial.
