Velleman MK132 Polarity Checker Kit

Velleman's MK132 polarity checker kit, once assembled, will allow for the diagnosis of any problem with speaker wiring. LED indicators will show open circuits, short circuits, reversed polarity, or correct polarity. For installers and live sound technicians, this can be invaluable. Velleman won't make you work too hard for this tool, either, with minimal soldering and large through-hole components. Requires one 9V battery (not included). Dimensions: 2-7/16" x 1-9/16".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great ProductWorked great. I didn't have any troubles with the solder joints breaking off the board, or the alligator clips being too slippery. The only thing that bothers me is the wires to the alligator clips are a little stiff. But that's not too much of a problem. I found the project box with the part number # 320-708 worked the best. Looks a little big at first, but the PC Board and the battery holder fit nicely on the lid together. I drilled holes to mount my LEDs on the top of the box, the switch on the side of the box, and two holes on the front for the leads to come out. The extra wires for the LEDs and the switch, plus the lead wires fit nicely inside the box, without having to cram everything into the box. Like I suspected, the circuit only requires a button with two leads. So most buttons will do, but I used the button with part number # 060-622. The button is a little long but worked fine in this box. I couldn't find anything small enough to put the smaller PC Board in, so like in the directions I wrapped in in shrink wrap. Looks good and is protected. I mounted my PC Board, battery holder, and LEDs with hot glue. I also secured all the wires to the PC Board that were in any risk of breaking with hot glue, after I wrapped them in shrink wrap. An epoxy will work good for those too, but a cheap and easier way for me was to use hot glue. Excluding cost for shrink wrap and hot glue I made this for under $20. Parts Express is awesome and now I made this tool that will help me in my future projects and jobs. Perfect DIY tool for DIYs.

Ok I have got it built, but don't know how to use it to test speakers or inductors and other hobby and professional projects and experiments? I wish it had a very informative manual and a schematic diagram and parts lay out and more information on how to use it. And I agree with the recent reviewer, the diodes are indeed hard to read. When I tried to assemble the kit, the wires were thin, and when I tried to divide the board when the instructions told me to cut it, I used scissors to cut it, but unfortunitely part of the board fractured. The instructions was poor that they left out where the other parts go. After I built it, for the first time, I could not get it work ,and why it did not work was that the wires connected to the alligator clip were not connected with the sleeve on, I had to fix them, and then I got the kit working again, but installing the wires on the board was kinda difficult. Above all this, this kit is not for beginners because what I have said about it requires a real multimeter, good tools and good soldering technique to soldering this board. And they need to separate the small board from the main board so no one has to separate with what ever is available. They made a big mistake instructing me to cut the board off, but with what?? I have to buy another kit since I messed up this work, but the good thing is that I am happy that it now works good. How another thing, did not include instructions on how to use the kit. That's disappointment. So you must be a little experienced when using the kit.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your time, unless....The features are great. The price is great. If you intend to use this item as a real piece of test equipment, think again. I have been soldering for 55 years. I KNOW how to solder. The traces on this pcb are the thinnest I have ever encountered. Once the component is soldered in place, the SLIGHTEST movement of the part will lift the trace and break it. The adhesive used to put the copper on to the pcb is inferior also. The alligator clip insulators will drive you up a wall. It is like they injected silicone into the insulator. Trying to get the jaws open is a real trick. I had planned to glue them on, until I discovered these other problems. I would have been happy to pay twice as much for this kit if it had a decent circuit board. The ONLY way a technician could ever use this more than once or twice would be to assemble it very carefully and if it worked, pot it in epoxy so that nothing would move. Far more trouble than it was worth. The zeners and the diode are not identified except for the part number. You MUST use a magnifying glass to even begin to see the number. That is a minor thing and expected. I have built kits by this manufacturer before with no troubles at all. This is the exception for sure.
