Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Price, Amazing Sound.I bought the component kit for fun and created my own L/C/R ported enclosures. 3/4in mdf with oak veneer. This project is user friendly and easy to find answers to any questions that my come up. The sound from these speakers were faaaar better than I had expected. the mids and highs are very crisp, and to my surprise they have some great lows as well. I highly recommend buying 2 sets of these and making MT's for the rear surrounds with the expense of buying a tweeter and crossover parts. Would be worth it and am thinking of doing so myself. If you choose to do something like mine i recommend buying a decent spray gun, liquor, great primer, and good quality paint. Can't stress that enough, I tried polyurethane and it was such a pain! Will never use again. All in all great project, and for the money...Why not!!! you couldn't find anything that sounds better for the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great first project. These speakers are clear and transparent, they do good work on the highs they are a little week on the low end but nothing a sub cant fix. I think we made them look better than they sound but they are great. I made these with my father he is into woodworking so that portion of the project took about 50hr but it was fun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound, better priceBought this as my first set of nice speakers. I am completely satisfied, I didn't realize how much I was missing from music with poor quality speakers.I built some vented boxes based very closely on Curt C's design except I moved the drivers around a little bit and moved the port to the side as they will be sitting against a wall. I painted the fronts with some red oxide primer then cleared over the top and covered the sides with some of the walnut vinyl found here at parts express.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Deal but...This is a great deal on good sounding speakers. I built the sealed version and used a sub. The designer states that they were designed to be used in various types of enclosures for HT or music reproduction on a budget. And I'm sure they will fulfill those roles, but for new comers picking out a good sounding budget speaker for music I would suggest you consider the Karma Indignia DIY speaker project that is listed on the PE speaker projects section. They use a better sounding and much better looking woofer and cross the tweeter at a higher hz. I just think for music they sound better. They are in the same price range and from the documentation went under quite a bit of scruteny while being developed. The SPL is lower but they played plenty loud for me and you can buy nicely finished front baffles for them. I'm sure people that disagree with me will hit the unhelpful button and that is fine but I thought it might help someone to point them in that direction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What are you waiting for?I decided to try my hand with oak for the cabinets, I'm usually a mdf kinda guy but wanted to make something to be proud of.  I used oak ply from a box store and quarter round base trim. Stained with minwax cherry but not yet varnished. After breaking these in face to face,  out of phase with a blanket over the two in my garage for a few days I connected them to my Nad C725BEE. I couldn't believe my ears! Setup properly, not toed in directly at the listener, the soundstage is like surround sound. So clear and transparent it doesn't sound like speakers, just music. I actually ducked down once because lightning clapped overhead but was in the track, not outside. Bass response is great all the way down low, and measured pretty flat, but it can only be made better with a sub for the physical impact. I've been building speakers now for 19 years and these are the best I've ever had.All in all my expectations were surpassed in every way and you can't expect a better deal than this for truly high dollar sound.

If a guy had NO OTHER CHOICE but to put this speaker setup in a cabinet with significantly different dimensions than recommended, and optimum sound quality was not a priority, would it still be a bad idea? I mean...will it sound bad, or just not as good?

Asked by: HangtenTex
This depends on the actual dimensions. The only dimension that will really play a roll in how the crossover and baffle step are contoured will be the baffle width. If that is the same give or take an inch or so, the rest of the dimensions won't make much difference as long as they create a proper volume for the woofers.

I was looking to build my own cabinets, and i was wondering if it mattered if flush mounted the speakers? Also the Amplifier/Crossover Configuration in the project has 5 components, what component would i need to order to make it?

Asked by: Tarun
Flush mounting woofers is purely aesthetic, although flush mounting tweeters will have a minor affect on how smooth of a response you will get. The crossover components in this kit can be hot glued to a piece of cardboard and soldered together.

What wattage rms should I provide to get the best performance?

Just want to say thanks, for a newbie like me your site rocks!
Asked by: Mesa Mike
These are rated for about 60 watts RMS, so any amplifier between 50 and 75 watts RMS will work very well.

Crossover point? and cost relative to factory assembled ones.

I built this one a few months ago but I would like to know the crossover point as i build a lot of these kind and want to order a Dayton pre assembled crossover for a pair of the same drivers in a home made cabinet.Right now I have 2.5 K and 3 K factory made crossovers. As the factory made ones are 26 bucks. Can i come out cheaper with building my own from these parts? I build a lot of speakers. I don't see here where you can just order a 2.5 K or 3 K and get all the pieces in one wad. That would be nice.
Asked by: clod
The crossover in this design takes into consideration the acoustic roll off properties of the drivers, the cabinet affect on frequency response and other specific things associated with a custom design. The crossover point is roughly 1500 Hz. If you were to use an off the shelf crossover I would not go any lower than 2kHz.

Can i use this in TMM Arrangement ? What´s the total RMS?

TriTrix MTM TL
Asked by: Elias villafranco
No - the crossover is designed for an MTM alignment - any other configuration will degrade system performance. The built-out system should be comfortable with 75 watts RMS per channedl 20 - 20khz.
