Topping D20 Multi-Function DAC

Topping, who has made a fine reputation on desktop-sized Class D amplifiers, is branching out! The D20 is a feature-packed digital analog converter that accepts USB, digital coaxial, or digital optical signals, and is switchable from the front panel.

For those using a computer as a music source, the benefits of using an external DAC are hard to overstate. The D20 will connect using the included USB cable. It's "plug and play", requiring no additional software installation. The digital-to-analog processing is taken outside the computer chassis and all its electrical interference that can degrade fidelity. In addition, the quality of components inside a well-designed DAC will rival almost any sound card. If using a computer as a primary audio source, moving from the onboard sound card to a DAC will likely yield a dramatic improvement in sound quality.

Those using an aging or inexpensive CD player, DVD player, or Airport Express will also benefit from using the Topping D20. By sending the raw digital signal from the source through the coaxial or optical inputs on the DAC, they take advantage of Topping quality in the part of the digital signal chain that matters most – the actual conversion of 1s and 0s into an analog waveform.

Our customers have told us again and again how much they love Topping's recipe for success: constructing audio components using quality, name-brand parts, housing them in attractive, rugged enclosures, and selling them for surprisingly affordable prices.

The D20 holds fast to that proven formula, using a Texas Instruments PCM1793 DAC chip, Burr-Brown OPA2134 opamp, resistors from KOA, and capacitors from EPCOS, ERO, and Nichicon.

Specifications: • Supported sampling rates: 16~24 bit, 44.1~96 kHz • THD+N: 0.0013% @ 1 kHz • Output impedance: 200 ohms • Dimensions (mm): 45 H x 115 W x 200 D.

Topping D20 Multi-Function DAC
Topping D20 Multi-Function DAC is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect sound from CDs and TV optical, Laptop USBI have only had this digital to analog converter for three weeks and am hearing things in familiar recordings I didn't know existed. I've owned a number of SACD players and non of them do justice to standard compact discs like this little jewel does. Location of instruments within whatever sound stage they were recorded is precisely reproduced, perhaps rivaling or surpassing many of the DSD recordings I own. Even the timbre of instruments is more accurately preserved for the listener, making them easily identifiable even in thick textured music. This is especially noticeable in the higher frequencies, bringing liquidity especially to the female voice and instruments with complex overtones such as massed violins, cymbals and flutes. Transient attack on percussion and guitar are impressively presented without edginess. Anyone with decent, not necessarily expensive equipment will immediately notice the difference. I do quite a lot of my listening on the Lepai 2020 A+ and speakers, several of which cost between 1 and 2 hundred dollars each. This Topping DAC is the best $150 I've ever spent on Hi-Fi equipment

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice DACI am impressed with this DAC’s overall clarity. This DAC has great sound stage with reduced congestion during loud passages, whether from my pc or my CD player. I have used it for 3 weeks now and I note that my ears do not get fatigued like before. Definitely a cost-effective upgrade to my system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Was that 'thud' between the vocal the cut-in?"Can you really tell the difference?" Yes! And not just because I spent a lot more money for a commodity part in some electronic device. Everything sounds better with this device; more detail, seemingly better bass, clearer mids and more totally subjective descriptors. I have this device attached to a Sonos Connect and then straight into an amp and I can hear details that I cannot detect on my other Sonos devices, playing the same compressed music. The best example I have is hearing the cuts in a looping re-mix - I was amazed I could hear the 'thud' where the DJ mixer cut in and out the looping vocal. I'll be getting more of these devices for the other music playing systems I have.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It works!!!!!!!!!!!I stream music (itunes, Spotify, Pandora) from my Mac to an Airport Express in another room. Since inserting the D20 between the Airport Express and my receiver music is much more transparent and open. The most notable improvements are female voices, strings, guitar, and cymbals. I couldn't be happier. BTW, there,s no jitter(whatever that is).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Way to Enter the World of DAC's!Those interested in entering the world of DAC’s and don’t want to spend a fortune can start right here. I’ve owned the Topping D20 for 2 weeks now. The first thing I noticed out of the box is how tiny it is. You could fit this guy virtually anywhere. And at less than $150 it surely is a steal, considering the build quality and components used. The heart of the D20 is the Texas Instruments PCM1793 DAC chip, which has been out there for more than just a few years. Maybe that’s why they can keep the cost down.I’ve used the D20 with an older Yamaha DVD/CD player, a Micca Media player and my 5 year old computer. In each case, there was a vast improvement in sound quality, especially the computer. What I noticed right off the bat was the treble, which is very smooth and clean. No harshness or “glare”. Cymbals ring true but don’t sound over the top. I noticed this especially with older jazz recordings where the highs originally sounded rolled off. Midrange sounds better too. More “bloom”, more presence. A noticeable improvement in the imaging as well. Bass is very solid, but not overpowering. If you always wanted an audiophile quality DAC and never could afford it, now is your chance. The Topping D20 will not disappoint you!

Is the Topping D20 compatible with HP 11 Chromebook USB output? In other words, can i put the D20 between the HP 11 Chromebook USB port and my amp?

Asked by: john nyc
Yes--I see no reason this would not work. This is a standard USB port and this amp is designed to work with it.

What kind of cable is needed to connect between this DAC and an Airport Express? USB?

Assuming the Airport Express has only a USB output, you will need a USB cable.

Sample rate?

Other sources for this DAC claim it to have a 96khz sample rate yet Parts Express lists it as 44.1~48khz. Can someone explain this to me?
Asked by: treebeard
I am sorry for the confusion, this is indeed 24/96. We will correct the copy as soon as possible to reflect this.
