Testing Loudspeakers Book
This book is an invaluable reference for the dedicated speaker builder. Not intended for the novice, it covers in-depth driver testing, low frequency system electrical impedance tests, frequency response acoustical testing of single and multiple drivers, and techniques for deriving Thiele-Small parameters using both analog and PC based methods. Written by Dr. Joseph D'Appolito, contributing editor for Speaker Builder magazine. He also pioneered the extremely popular "D'Appolito" woofer-tweeter-woofer driver configuration, seen in many successful loudspeakers systems. This soon-to-be-classic clearly explains the proper way to acoustically test and measure a loudspeaker. If you own "The Loudspeaker Design Cookbook" then this book should be the next addition to your technical library. 174 pages. Copyright: 1998.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent content, a must read for pros and advanced DIY desginers, but not for the novice. This text is one of the few written for the advanced DIY designer or for pros looking for an overview of testing and measurment for loudspeakers. Understanding this reference doesn't require an engineering degree, but it is definately not an introductory text; the author has targeted the reader with advanced familarity with loudspeaker design and construction, and with a technical aptitude. The prospective buyer also should note that the text content focus is on tests and measurements, not on crossover design or enclosure construction; other references address these subjects.Getting the most out of this text will require access to sophisticated loudspeaker CAD software (Soundeasy, LEAP, etc), a precision microphone and mic preamp, an LCR meter, and a room that can be set-up for testing and measurment. For a more general treatment of loudspeaker design and construction, I would recommend Vance Dickason's "Loudspeaker Design Cookbook".

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good bookIf you were not a Technician this book would be overwhelming, fortunately I am an electronics Tech this book is right up my alley, some of the testing is a little dated, using lissajous figures, pronounced lisashoe, most scopes these days do not use X and Y inputs to determine frequency or phase angle difference, I do have a couple of older scopes that run in the 20 to 60 MHZ range that can diplay lissajous figures, for checking phase angle and frequency, using vertical and horizontal inputs, now days we have digital and analog multiple trace Oscopes, also D-APP should include some more info for the uninformd about LCR meters, multimeters, Scopes Digtal and analog, ammeters, frequency generators, spectrum analyzers, the basics of electronics, also the computer section is very dated the advances in the last 12 years have been pretty amazing compared to Windows 98, my first programs for speaker building were for my commodere 64 back in 82 and they worked pretty well, also box design along with material selection would have been a good topic to use in testing loudspeakers in and out of enclosures, the book needs some updating and a more practical guidelines for test stand setup, still a very good book....
