Tang Band W4-992C 4" Subwoofer 2 Ohm

Tang Band designed the unique W4-992C 4", 2 ohm subwoofer speaker to provide excellent bass response in a small package. While it may look similar to the other 4" drivers, the cone, voice coil, surround, and motor have been optimized for higher-power bass applications. High power tinsel leads and venting under the spider yield maximum thermal capacity. At the same time, a heavy-duty paper cone, rigid dustcap, and twin-roll surround allow linear and distortion-free cone movement.

This subwoofer is great for mini 2.5 or 3-way speakers, a 2-way design with a robust tweeter, and as a miniature computer subwoofer. The 2 ohm impedance allows for a wide array of wiring configurations: wire four in series for an 8 ohm load, eight in series-parallel for a 4 ohm load for maximum bass in minimum space. Perfect for modern audio applications, such as a subwoofer speaker bar to suppliment the bass in thinner sound bars. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Driver!This driver supported all of the requirements. Low tuning frequency in a large enclosure really brought out the best in these.I wired 4 in series up to a Lepai 2.1 amp(2x40W, 1x68W) and it rocked the lower end better than the high-ends. It was a bit over kill to have four of these but it is a beautiful change in pace from the large sub-woofers usually seen in cabinets.The only difficulty I had was cutting the holes for these to slide into. After I asked a question on this page after I was unsure. It was answered with the reassurance that it indeed was, "3 1/2" inches. Let me tell you, I measured not only twice and cut once but I even bought the Jasper Jig and cut a perfect 3 1/2" hole. Only to be greeted by an opening too small. I measured again, and it was 3 1/2" on the dot. It's kind of hard to make a High Fidelity system when 4 out of 8 circle cuts are cut with a jigsaw. I was very disappointed in the lack of drawings and technical drawings for this driver. It ended up delaying my project a day behind, and it was pushed to the next weekend.I ended up cutting a hole 3 5/8" and the driver fit snug in place. I almost didn't have to screw it in! Love the product and the project came out great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very tight bassThese are great little speakers, I also have the larger 5inch version that PE had on buyout a while back. Don’t let the size fool you they will hit; I have 4 wired in parallel and they don’t disappoint!

Can you recommend a 2 ohm tweeter to wire in series to get a 4 ohm load per channel. Thanks

Unfortunately you cannot series wire a tweeter with a woofer. In order to achieve a proper 4 ohm load you will have to wire two woofers together.

I built two boxes with 0.2 cu ft per box for two speakers per box with a port of 1.5" x 8".  Can I shorten or extend the port on one box to tune to a different Hz to get high bass output on different types of music?

Yes changing the port length will change the tuning frequency, long will tune lower and shorter will tune higher.

I plan on building a little Bluetooth "boombox" with this and couple 3 to 4 inch full range drivers. can this driver share an enclosure with the others? Also can you recomend an amp that will run on 10v? Thanks in advance

I would not recommend having this share the same airspace as the full range drivers. Since this driver is 2 ohms, we do not have an amplifier that will drive it by itself, you will need to wire two in parallel to create a 4 ohm load.

I was considering using a pair of these in a sealed sonotube enclosure. Looks like most of the recommendations are for a ported enclosure. Is a sealed tube a bad idea with these?

Ported is the most practical option if you want any appreciable amount of bass from them. Sealed will work but a high pass is required and they will not play anything below about 120Hz.

I have a LEPAI LP-838 and I'd like to use the Tang Band W4-992C on the subwoofer channel.  The LEPAI LP-838 specs a minimum 4 ohms on each channel.  The question is, is the Tang Band W4-992C at 2 ohms safe to run on this amp?

Unfortunately no, you will want to have two of these woofers wired in series to provide a safe load for the amplifier.

Will these drivers work well in an lower tuned vented enclosure? I keep seeing recommendations in the 50-55Hz range, but what about tuning down into the high 30's? I was thinking 8 drivers in a vehicle, instead of the common single 10 or 12.

The lowest I would recommend tuning these would be about 40 Hz for the sake of power handling and cone excursion. Eight drivers in 1.3 cubic feet with a 4" diameter, 15" long port will achieve this.
