Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW; what a fantastic book! The only thing wrong with the book is I find the print small. I can not believe I am saying that but it is true. As I get older my eyes are failing me. So its not the book its me.The book is really well written and he has a great understanding of the math and makes it really easy to understand. The author cares about his readers and does not talk down to them. His explanations and descriptions are excellent. This is a highly entertaining read for anybody interested in speaker design.I was sad to see that he had passed away in 2009.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Probably the best out there...Explains everything that someone without experience will need to know. Vast majority of it is well written. If you read it over a couple times, you'll probably understand it. I have looked for a long time for books on the subject, and I own another one. This one is the superior of the two, and I doubt there is any better for beginner-intermediate. Also, it's not dry, which is a big plus. The guy knows exactly what he's talking about. Definitely a great start, definitely recommended.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from More would be betterThe author is more concentrated in the formulas and how to work them out and spend little time in the concepts. It is more oriented as a Math book. The book shows you how complicated it is to design a speaker system. The box, the drivers and crossovers have to be precisely match in order to have an excellent sound. It gives you an idea of how the whole thing works but you won't be able to do a new design on your own. At the end, He suggests several projects that you can copy and follow.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Complicated but a good resource. The book is well-written, but I haven't had any math for over 50 years, so I skimmed over those chapters with the computations. I still got a lot of tips and suggestions which should prove useful in the future. Maybe a better choice for me might have been the LOUDSPEAKER DESIGN COOKBOOK 7th edition. I'll try the software suggestions rather than try to do the math. Still worth having in a personal library. Parts Express service and shipping are outstanding!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for beginnersThis is a great book for beginners who who either want to know the theory of speaker design or want to design their first speaker. The author covers just about everything you need to know to get started, from selecting drivers, designing and constructing a cabinet and building a crossover. The author has a background as an algebra instructor and even gives tips on how to do calculations with a calculator.

Crossover Design?

How in depth does it go into designing your own crossovers? I'm looking to design my first pair and want to have a great crossover design.

If this is your first time ,set parameters, room size , stereo output, budget, then study the projects, tutorials from multi websites and buy the book! Knowledge is the key to excellent home speakers, and very cost effective depending on your imagination(not to mention ego of your artistic creation) You may also want to hunt the clearance page for lower cost drivers to experiment ( your first set of blown $5 tweeters hurts less than the set of $350 Hiel's I blew.)

would this book be good for car audio subwoofer boxes? i would like to know how to figure out how to build boxes over wheel tubs. (odd shaped boxes.)

if not this book, what would be good to get advanced box building techniques from?

Any good material like this for the DIY will help you understand audio, i started in 1968,i had almost no books to help me ,so i prayed for wisdom, studied all the math and built my church pa speakers. realized I couldn't hear my favorite music in the car at 60 mph with the windows down. The rest is audio history.! ps odd shaped boxes can have incorrect resonances in spare tire wells but the cabinet effect of the auto will cover most of the problems.
