Shure M97xE Hi-Fi Turntable Phono Cartridge

The M97xE is a superbly tracking, neutral, smooth-sounding magnetic cartridge designed to provide long hours of undistorted, easy listening without fatiguing the ear or tiring the mind. This cartridge is able to accurately reproduce very difficult musical passages, particularly in the high-frequency range, where audio modulations are the smallest and most concentrated, and stylus tip movement is consequently the most rapid. Its highly precise tracking ability and flat frequency response are made possible by Shure's unique Type II low-mass thin-wall aluminum alloy stylus cantilever, combined with a precision-crafted, finely polished, elliptical diamond tip. Includes screws.

The very low mass M97xE cartridge shares several important features with the V15VxMR audiophile cartridge such as Shure’s exclusive viscous-damped Dynamic Stabilizer, which maintains a uniform distance between the cartridge and the record under difficult playing conditions, such as those caused by warped records, or mismatched tonearm mass. When such stabilization is not required, the stabilizer brush can be locked up into its detent position, which, under ideal playing conditions, can provide even better sound quality. A die cast aluminum mounting block provides secure, vibration-free attachment to the tonearm while the SIDE-GUARD stylus protection system helps prevent stylus damage if the cartridge accidentally slides across a record. This unique feature responds to side thrusts on the stylus by withdrawing the entire stylus cantilever and tip safely into the stylus housing before the cantilever can be damaged.

Shure M97xE Hi-Fi Turntable Phono Cartridge
Shure M97xE Hi-Fi Turntable Phono Cartridge is rated 4.75 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid work from an American company.I was impressed with its ability to track high notes. Bass is clean and tight. The mounted brush in down position really does an excellent job. Kudos were received for this cartridge from both Absolute Sound and Consumer Reports.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic Shure sound.Ever since the V-15 series, high end Shure cartridges have been known to have a very smooth and musical sound with no harshness like some other hi end cartilages have. Some mistake a bit of high end harshness in some other top cartridges as an extended high end. Many moons ago, I originally had a V-15 type IV (which also had the dampened brush) on a Thorens TD 160. and loved the sound. This was after trying a few top cartridges of the day and not being satisfied with their harshness.Recently, I got back into vinyl and got a Pioneer PL112D. After refurbishing it, I installed the Shure M97xE. I was not disappointed. It tracks beautifully at 1.75 g with the brush down and is indeed a worthy successor to the V-15 series.. It has the same detailed, smooth, non fatiguing Shure sound with a flat freq response that I remember and love.As others suggest, I also ordered a Shure tracking force gauge along with it and also recommenced it.The M97xe is a :" low rider" and 1.75 g as Shure lists as "Optimum" with the brush down is indeed its sweet spot.BTW, be sure to look under the foam insert to find the mounting/overhang gauge. With a standard head shell, overhang will be exactly 49 mm from the back of the rubber gasket to the stylus tip (for any cartridge) but, it's good to check it with the gauge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from compatabilityIorigunally mounted one of these to a Shure SME 3009 arm on an Empire 398 TT. I then aquired a Technics SL1200 MKII so bought a second one for it. Although two completely different types of arms and TT the cart. operates flawlwssly on both. I also purchased a 78RPM needle and enjoy being able to change the needle without changing carts. Great Value and great performance as is expected from Shure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great clarity, but duller high endThe clarity and depth of this cartridge are outstanding, although the high end is not as bright as on other cartridges I have used (Shure, Stanton, ADC). It tracks well and gives smooth, clear-cutting dynamics.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best cartridges for the priceI have another Shure cartidge M91ED with new stylus and I am comparing the M97xE to it. I have only used the new cartridge for about 15 hours so it will change over more usage. The M97xE tracks very well (I have stabilizer brush down) and this is great with records that have some "warp bumps" on them. Plays right through them. Also I have noticed that the bass is much better pronounced than with the M91ED. This cartridge has a very pleasing and "warmer" sound to it. I will definitely tell others about this cartridge and feel it is a very good starter cart for most people listening for the first time to vinyl (or even starting over again).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best kept secret in budget audio nirvana!!!This thing is proof that it doesn't take a lot of money to get really good sound. It was sort of a blessing that I found this little gem. I was going to get a more expensive audio technica, but like a lot of people, I'm on a tight budget. In this case, I'm glad I found the cheaper counter part. Not only was it cheaper, from many other reviews, it's probably better anyway.I gave it a 4.5 in features because it doesn't have instruction for using the alignment protractor. In fact, if it wasn't for reading up on it, I wouldn't have even known it was their. Instructions overall are kind of poor. Use google for learning the best set up.Tip: Invest in a gram scale. With such a low tracking force, I don't think trying to zero out your tone arm is good enough. .25 grams is a major change with this thing.Between the case, tools, and quality part, and other internet reviews, I will never even bother getting anything else.My only complain, and it's kind of silly. The mounting hardware that came with it was ugly. I reused the audio technica hardware that came with the original headshell. With all the good, it's really hard to find any fault, but I thought the supplied mounting hardware looked like it came from the local hardware store. This is the BEST of the best in most peoples realistic budget. Hit the internet for reviews and instructions. I've also read that this thing is too smooth. It's not unless you like sharp in your face sound. I even tested it with Beastie Boys. It is smooth, lovely, and you can listen to it for hours and you will want more. Don't spend more, don't get anything else, just get this!!!
