Sherwood RD-5405 5.1 Home Theater Receiver
Sherwood RD-5405 5.1 Home Theater Receiver is rated 4.25 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great budget receiver.used this receiver to replace a (very old) all in one sony 5.1 home theater receiver that did not have optical connection (THIS IS NOT A HDMI RECEIVER). It has more features, better sound and clarity even at high volume. This is a great buy if you are looking for a receiver on a budget.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty slick for the price!Purchased this unit to replace a unit that had died. Other reviewers stated that this unit fit the bill to go back in time and use with older equipment, and that is exactly what this unit does well. It has been stated that the HDMI stuff is a rouse and I agree, don't get sucked in on that. The instructions are a bit confusing for the set up, with patience ( and without a nagging person not helping ) you will get through it.The most important part to understand is that for the money and correct application the unit sounds quite good.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent receiver not the best..So without doing much research(my fault) I bought this receiver from parts express along with some dayton speakers and sub. Just looking through the specs it seemed to have everything I needed HDMI etc.. well thats not the case.I get the unit take it out of the box. Wire everything up and using an HDMI cable, I connect my laptop to the receiver through the HDMI port on the receiver, and connect my tv via the HDMI out.So I go to play some music and I get no sound. I already tested the system by listening to some radio just to make sure it all hooked up right. So I check my laptop make sure the HDMI audio is on etc etc. Turn off the laptop speakers. Check the tv to make sure nothing is set up wrong. I narrow everything down to the receiver (took me like 30 minuites of checking).. So I assume there is some setting on the receiver to change HDMI audio output right? I mean after all it does say HDMI on the unit.. NOPE.. I look through the manual and change every possible setting.. I call parts express to talk to the tech.. well like the review says below me.. read the fine print. In the manual it says the unit is not capable of processing audio signals from an HDMI source.. this has to be a joke right? I mean why even have HDMI ports? I could just plug the cable directly into my tv.. I dont need the video signal being downgraded by the receiver without the benefit of the audio output.. Honestly that is just beyond ridiculous to me..So I got around it by connecting my HDMI cable to my tv and running the audio out through RCA cable (didnt have an optical audio cable on hand)Sounds fine and probably not a huge difference in quality but with new technology being what it is I expected this simple feature to be present.. Left me dissapointed..Other than that.. its a fine receiver.. Decent power output but at a weird impedance.. I have the Dayton bookshelf speakers connected and they are 4 ohm speakers so its putting out a bit more power and not getting too hot at all.It has only the most very basic features and setup.. Good channel control the remote is user friendly.. Has a crossover which is good and some other things I like. Its a good buy if you dont need the HDMI feature.. It would make a great unit for your workshop/garage/mancave ..But I wouldnt really recommend it if you need the newest features.. Spend an extra 100 and get something better that will have all the features you want.

Sherwood RD-5405 5.1 Home Theater Receiver

The unit is equipped with two HDMI inputs which function as pass-through from the video device to the TV, essentially acting as an HDMI splitter for two devices. The device audio is then passed through with the video ending up played through the tv?

Asked by: kittyretsinis

I notice on the back of the receiver, the speaker outputs are marked 6 ohm...Can only 6 ohm speakers be used, or is that a minimum requirement and 8ohm speakers would work fine?

Asked by: NewB
The receiver will work with 8 ohm speakers, but with an increased impedance you will reduce the output of the amplifier. It is rated at 60 watts RMS per channel @ 6 ohms, so you will not get the full 60 watts per channel with 8 ohm speakers.

Is this receiver stable with 4 ohm speakers?

One of the reviews suggests so but I thought I would double check.
Asked by: Ajbastro
Sherwood does not recommend anything lower than 6 ohms be plugged into this amplifier.
