Replacement Speaker Driver for Bose 901 4-1/2" 1 Ohm

This driver's parameters were carefully optimized to match the performance of the classic Bose 901™ loudspeaker systems. Individually or in multiples, replacing your legendary but aging speakers has never been easier—or achieved better results. The top plate and T-yoke are Japanese-made cold forged low carbon steel. The flat back plate provides a uniform surface area to which the magnet is bonded, and the outside of the back plate is chamfered to maximize flux density in the gap. Critical attention has been paid to the pole piece and voice coil tolerances, thereby assuring high yield and immunity to mechanical issues. High-grade Y-35 strontium ferrite magnet material is utilized in the motor structure to ensure consistent motor force. The cone is made of long fiber New Zealand blue color pulp paper, an ideal material for cone applications and the foam surround of this driver make it almost identical to the original manufacturers appearance, design and performance. It's rigid and just "lossy" enough to produce full, accurate sound. A 2-layer low oxygen copper voice coil is wound on a high temperature resistant polyimide former. Every driver is hand checked and tested, based on a +-2 dB window.

NOTE: This driver has an impedance of 1 ohm, and should be used only to replace the 4-1/2” driver in the Bose 901™ (Series III or later) and Bose 802™ loudspeakers. Compatibility with other Bose loudspeaker models or automotive audio systems has not been verified. This product is not manufactured or distributed by Bose Corporation ™, the owner of the registered trademarks BOSE™, BOSE 802™ and BOSE 901™.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bose Roommate ReplacementsI purchased a pair of these to replace the aging drivers in an original pair of Roommates from '88. The original drivers, while still intact and serviceable, had started to become muddled in the midrange and lost a lot of high-end clarity. These speakers were rescued from a middle school computer lab several years ago, so I can only imagine the torture they went through for the better part of 20 years.A side-by-side comparison of the old vs new was (literally) music to my ears. The highs were crisp, the mids tight and the bass somewhat reserved. I suspect that the "well broken in" originaly drivers had much better bass response due to being beaten to a pulp, so I expect the bass response to continue to improve the more I use them. I have noticed the sound slowly changing as I've listened to them the past couple weeks, so I assume that if this trend continues the sound will be as it should be soon. For now, a simple EQ tweak makes everything happy and brings the bass more in line with how they used to sound.Just be careful with the spade connectors, mine were perilously close to shorting out on the magnet with the female terminal slipped on so I would highly recommend using an insulated female connector.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replacement Speaker Drivers for Bose 901My Bose 901 Series IV speakers have drivers with deteriorated foam surrounds (a common problem with older speakers). My first attempt at repair was to apply the 260-910 Surround Kit to my existing drivers. I'm not a complete klutz, but I was not successful installing the replacement surrounds with sufficient accuracy to restore the drivers. It takes great dexterity and care to position the surrounds, and I was just not up to the task. Seeing that the model 290-922 Replacement Drivers were available, I bought a complete set and installed them. The replacements went without a hitch (it took about four or five hours to do both speaker cabinets carefully), soldering the leads to the tabs on the replacement drivers. The results are excellent; the speakers sound like new. Because the drivers are new, I am confident that the magnets are strong and the cones are aligned properly -- two things I would have had doubts about had I refurbished the original drivers. I'm delighted with the results. Whether you choose to replace the foam surrounds or replace the drivers, you will find this excellent YouTube video helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbGfFw650gQ

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Little SpeakerI used this for a custom designed speaker cabinet and it performs great. I heard about a "Break In Period" but I didn't seem to notice any issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bose 901 Replacement Driver -I purchased a pair of Bose 901-III s from an antique dealer, the wood cabinets and the Jetson's style metal stands were near perfect, but all 18 of the drivers had decayed foam surrounds. I replaced the rotten foams with cloth surrounds and was not happy with the results: it's very difficult to align the cones, and more than half had some buzzing after I was done. I tried to take off the new surrounds and re-do, but it's a lot harder to do that the second time around! So I replaced the drivers I had messed up with the 290-922s and was up and running the same day. The pair of speakers sound great, and the speakers seem to be (as far as I can tell) exact replacements. You can play them plenty loud with no problems.

I need to replace some of the series one '901'speakers -would these work?

Asked by: 541kingfish
No series ones and twos drivers were 8 ohm each. 3 sets of 3 s/p wired to nominal 8 ohm

Is this the same 4" door speaker used in the 2001 Audi A4 Bose system?

Asked by: bgbuffalo
I know your post is pretty old but if your speaking in reference to the front speakers in your Audi they look identical. They have the same Reuleaux triangle shape and the surface area on the drivers are 4"even though it's still a 4 1/2" driver. Bose used the 901 drivers in some of their other products(Bose Freestyle) as well so the idea isn't farfetched. If you haven't replaced it already i'd say try it. It would just be a $20 failed experiment if it doesn't work.

Will this fit a Bose 151 cabinet?

I have a dead Bose 108515P driver. Do you have a sketch or dimensions (like bolt-circle diameter) available? Regards, Larry
Asked by: Larry McI
Unfortunately this driver is only suitable for the Bose 901 cabinets due to its 1 ohm impedance. The 151 drivers are 8 ohm and using these as replacements would potentially damage your amplifier.

Is this suitable for a Bose Lifestyle outdoor speaker? It looks the same size etc.

Asked by: 1959bc
If the Lifestyles speaker uses the triangle-framed Bose driver, this replacement will work. They were all 1ohm drivers.

How come there is no Xmax parameter given?

Asked by: twprod
The Bose 901 driver uses an "Evenhung" topology, which is different from the "overhung" or "underhung" topologies used in most other speaker drivers. In an "overhung" topology, the voice coil is longer than the magnetic gap, and Xmax is calculated as the coil length minus the gap length and then divided by two. This provides the distance that the coil can move in either direction while keeping the magnetic gap completely full of VC windings. In an 'underhung' topology, powerful magnets are used to create a long magnetic gap, and the coil height is shorter than the height of the gap. In that design, Xmax is equal to the gap height minus the coil height and then divided by two. In an evenhung topology, the coil height is the same as the gap height. There is no easy way to calculate the effective Xmax parameter apart from costly and time-consuming measurements of the distribution of magnetic flux in the field. The real-world usable Xmax of these drivers is between 2 and 3 mm, but working together, they can move as much air as a larger driver with longer excursion. However, we don't publish this value because it's based strictly on observation and not measurement.

Will these work with a swapout of my Car Bose System?

I have a 2006 Nissan Armada with a Bose system. The dash 3" tweeters went out on me. Will these be the speakers to swap themout for? Is the wiring the same attachment as bose?
Asked by: pointblake
These drivers are designed to replace the drivers in Bose 901 and Bose Panaray 802 speakers only. They are probably not suitable for replacing your car speakers; consult your Nissan dealer to obtain the correct replacements for your Bose audio system, since it is a Nissan vehicle and they will have the parts.
