Over a decade ago, Radian Audio Engineering went into business with a commitment to manufacture loudspeaker components that accurately reproduce the full frequency range of the audio spectrum. They began by building coaxial loudspeakers and compression drivers. The Radian 450PB, 465PB and the 475PB, with a 1.75” diaphragm, represent the refinement of their design efforts in 1” exit-format compression driver technology. All Radian compression drivers feature heat-treated structural alloy aluminum diaphragm domes which form an optimum balance of strength and low weight. This is a key factor in extending high frequency response.

Radian diaphragms utilize a Mylar® surround, which not only enhances the diaphragm’s reliability, but eliminates fatigue which destroys other compression driver diaphragms. In addition to being virtually indestructible, Mylar® surrounds provide excellent dampening characteristics which translate into smooth, low-distortion, linear output devoid of the resonant peaks typically present in diaphragms made with metal surrounds. Beyond the obvious advantages of our Mylar®-aluminum composite construction, Radian diaphragms utilize high temperature voice coil formers and advanced adhesives which allow Radian compression drivers to sustain high RMS and peak power levels over extended periods of time.

Radian diaphragm assemblies are self-aligning and may be rapidly serviced in the field by simply removing the three screws on the driver’s backcap and replacing the old unit with the new one.

Superior sound quality, unparalleled power handling, extended high frequency response, and high reliability make Radian compression drivers the preferred choice of loudspeaker systems manufacturers, consultants, contractors, designers, and engineers around the world. They are ideal for use in high output, high power touring sound systems and stage monitors, while their low distortion, high fidelity, and linear response deliver clear, crisp music and speech for theatrical, auditorium, stadium, convention and church installations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Natural and effortless sound. In my setup these just sound *right*. I also purchased the DE 250 B & C drivers to compare them too, and I prefer the Radians by a significant margin for my application, which is home audio. I do hear that the Radians are less "dynamic", to me they're vastly more natural, precise, and smooth. They have a sweetness to them that makes them enjoyable and appreciable in ones living room. The music really springs to life from these drivers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You will not be disappointed!I’m using these in a high-end home audio application. I’ve mated them with B&C ME45 cast-aluminum horns (an excellent mate for these drivers by the way). I’m powering the horns with a Crown DC-300A Series 2 amplifier, via active crossover (24-dB/octave, set at about 1.2 kHz high-pass.) Right out of the box & without any break-in, these are some of the most crisp, and most neutral sounding highs that I’ve ever heard. It’s simply hard to believe that these are compression horns. The sound is amazing – capable of both high & low listening levels. Do not waste your time & money on mid/tweeter combinations ever again – these horns have you covered. They’re expensive, yes - but are WELL WORTH every penny. Before I purchased these, I called Radian and spoke with one of their engineers. He answered all of my questions, and we chatted about all things audio. What a great company. The folks at Radian are down to earth, and are true audio enthusiasts. Purchase these, and you'll be very happy you did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Driver and ValueI have been using the Radian 475PB in my new DIY econo-waves for about 9 months now. I'm using them with JBL waveguides, crossed over at 1K Hz to vintage JBL 128H-1 woofers.I always wanted hi-fi speakers utilizing compression drivers so I decided to build a pair now that I'm retired. However, I was initially concerned about a shallow mid-range and harsh high end. I listen to music only, exclusively jazz.I narrowed my selection down to the Radian 475PB and BMS 4550. I selected the Radian driver due to its aluminum diaphragm vice textile, and it's made in the US which is becoming a rarity these days. I intentionally avoided titanium diaphragms. After building the speakers, I tested and tuned them. I was shocked at how great they sound. The mid-range is forward and voices sound incredible, and the high frequency is extremely smooth and extended. It has the characteristics of high end mid-range drivers and tweeters, but it's faster and more detailed. If you want to build a pair musical two way speakers with compression drivers there is no need to look further. Also, the price was very reasonable for a driver of this quality.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but consider other options tooIt's a good driver, but other choices are worth consideration too :- B&C DE250, comparable smoothness, but above all more dynamic. I prefer this driver.- BMS4550, more detailed, however has a slightly 'techy'/metallic sound.Bear in mind that these are impressions with my setup, results might vary with different types of amplifiers, for horn driver specially the output impedance can make a huge difference.Overall a great driver, but prefer B&C DE250

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic driver!!Recently I've been exploring a higher efficiency design. I've done a number of 3-way and 2-way active designs using various silk dome and ceramic drivers. I've not had the pleasure to listen to many compression drivers on their own but I've my share of listening to a lot of PA setups. This is also my first venture into horns so maybe its not the driver that is that good but the technology?Ok, enough with the background. Packaging was very good. The drivers came in individual boxed units within a larger shipping box. I also ordered the QSC horn from parts express. I almost dropped the 475PBs as they are VERY, VERY heavy. The magnets on them are larger than the Peerless 830869 and not by a small margin. You will have account for mechanical support when mounting this driver as the horn will not do the trick. Build of the 475PB is top quality. The unit looks and feels like a top tier driver. I felt slightly cheated when handling this driver. Compared with other tweeters in this price range (tweeters not compression drivers), I felt like the 475PB was the best bargain since........I still feel like I stole them. What you get for this price and performance can probably not be beaten.Speaking of performance, I connected them to the horns and crossed them over at 1kHz. I did a quick initial measurement and it seemed like the horn held pattern down to 1kHz, although it may be pushing it. I added the horn compensation and level matched them to my woofers. Extension of these drivers goes out to at least 20kHz. I believe most ribbons use Aluminum so the frequency response of the 475 is not unexpected. The frequency response and materials used was why I chose the 475 in the first place. I was unsure of what the sound would be like since many people complain of horn honk, ect, ect.I don't know what it is. Either compression drivers in the home are the best thing since slice bread or the 475 is THAT good (I believe the 475 is just that good). Micro detail galore without the "honk" and an ease that I've never experienced before. I now know what people mean when they say "effortless". I know I'll be ridiculed for this, but not since the Paradigm beryllium tweeters has my system sounded that good on the top end. Air, extension and transient response combined with highish power handling (it is a pro driver after all) is something special. A direct comparison to the Visaton KE25 (ceramic tweeter that I like) was........I will never use anything less than the Radian. Realism with the snare drum and cymbals are eerie. The sense of space is also spooky real. Even though the Paradigms had an awesome sense of air, extension and clarity, I never got the same sense of space as with the Radian. It could be directivity change, something I'm not used to, or the lower crossover point, but the bottomline is:The Radian 475PB killed every midrange/tweeter setup from 1kHz up that I've had in my room to date. This includes silk dome, ceramic, planer ribbons ect. The only thing that came close is the Paradigm Beryllium. The Paradigms were awesome but I didn't get the same sense of space. The Paradigms did do something special with the micro detail, but something is different between them (maybe the lower crossover point of the Radian?). I'd be hard pressed to choose between these and the paradigm tweeter. Dynamics and transient response without compression seem to be the key but I'm only guessing. I can not imagine what is next up the food chain. Can anyone recommend something? I'd be very, very hard pressed to change these out of my system. I've only had them for a short time so I'm still in the wow factor. These are not laid back but to date they are not shouty either. For me, these are the new standard for evaluation, but I guess only time will tell.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Radian 475PB DriverI have been building Econowaves for several years now and even use one version as my home system. Having built several systems I hve used several horn driver types, namely the Selenium, B&C, Peavy, etc with the Econowave and QSC horn lens. By far the best sounding, smoothest of all of the drivers I have used this Radian driver is by far the best! With a bit of tilt correction they can be virtualy flat out to 20K, These crossover perfectly well at -12/oct @ 1.2k or even lower with an active network! It can be more costly than other drivers similar to it, but when you hear them side by side it is easy to understand why you would like the Radian! I have built two Econowave systems using this as the featured driver and gotten rave reviews when used with a "Z-19" network! The sound is never harsh, very good with vocals, piano and brass. When used with the QSC Econowave lens it creates a very wide & detailed soundstage that only impresses you.If you need an excellent 1" exit driver this one should be seriously considered, and if you can A/B it to others you will understand why it sounds so good- even better!DC

Does anyone know this compression driver's exit angle????

I've googled this and was unable to find this info. Doesn't radian know the exit angle?
Asked by: Defefef
You will need to contact Radian directly. Looking through the copy I have of the Radian catalogue does not list a specification for the exit angle for the 475. However the 950 has a known exit angle of 20.3Radian Audio Engineering, Inc.Address:600 N. Batavia St.Orange, CA 92868Telephone:714.288.8900Fax:714.288.1133
