QSC GX5 Power Amplifier 500 Watts/ch at 8 ohms

QSC designers, headed by Pat Quilter, have optimized output and appearance while reducing raw material cost and weight. GX Series amplifiers are ideal for professional entertainers who require maximum performance and portability on a limited budget. It's all here – dramatic styling, easy hookup and adjustments, excellent audio quality and QSC reliability.

GX Series amplifiers are ideal for professional entertainers who require maximum performance and portability on a limited budget. The hallmarks of the QSC brand - professional audio quality, meticulous engineering, precision manufacturing and long-term reliability - are all intrinsic to GX. Add contemporary styling, multiple input/output options, light weight, and advanced protection circuitry, and the GX Series clearly represents real value - something everyone can use.

GX amplifiers deliver just the right amount of power to the most popular speakers used by entertainers. Typically, loudspeaker manufacturers recommend an amplifier with power output equal to the speaker's Program (Music) Power rating or two times (2 x) the Continuous (RMS) Power rating.

Technical Notes
The GX5 uses a Class H  system, based on key elements of the PL Series, (PLX, PL3, CX, DCA) almost doubling power in the same size and weight. QSC design expertise allows the output devices to shift from low-power to high-power rails in less than a millionth of a second, ensuring that the output power is always right where it needs to be without excess loss.

This amplifier uses premium toroidal power transformers for reliable "mid-weight" performance. A variable-speed fan moves air crosswise through the amplifier, drawing cool air in over the power transformer, through the fan, and then over the heat sink. This keeps the transformer cool and allows a full size heat sink to fit in a down-sized chassis.

As always, GX Series amplifiers are fully protected from the usual hazards of the trade, ensuring stable performance and long life.

GuardRail™
GuardRail protection delivers full peak power while preventing detrimental overloads. During excessive clipping, or extreme overheating, GuardRail reduces gain just enough to preserve the integrity of the music, protect the speakers and keep the audience excited, without unprofessional distortion levels or shutdowns.

Subwoofer/Satellite Crossover
A subwoofer reduces strain on the full-range speaker, allowing it to play louder, or letting a smaller speaker do the same job. The GX Series supports this mode with a Crossover switch that splits the full-range input entering Ch 1, sending 20 Hz -100 Hz to the sub (Ch 1) and 100 Hz - 20 kHz to the top box (Ch 2). The front panel gain controls balance the sub and top box, while GuardRail optimizes peak power into the sub and top individually, for greater musical impact and dynamic range. GuardRail optimizes peak power into the sub and top individually, for greater musical impact and dynamic range.

QSC GX5 Power Amplifier 500 Watts/ch at 8 ohms
QSC GX5 Power Amplifier 500 Watts/ch at 8 ohms is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great AmpIf your looking for a good reliable amp in this wattage range, then this is the amp you want. I own two, one runs my mains and one runs my subs. I'm using them in a DJ application. If you take care of them and use them correctly they will last a very long time. I live in central Illinois and Parts Express had my latest order at my front door in 2 days.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from good choice for starter djI use this amp to power 2 high boxes and 1 sub, the sound is great, rocks small to midsized venues. Even one larger venue I played it did awsome. I accidenttly caused a backfeed into once it and it still preformed, it did get a little warm from that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lots of clean powerUnlike some of the amps out there this one is rated in RMS power. It is used on a bass guitar set up using one 15", two 10"and a horn tweeter. It really made the speakers come alive. Stays clean even with the clip lights blinking. I would prefer a higher crossover point but that is a minor point. I tried several other amps on this rig but the GX5 will stay.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best $400 amp!I use this amp to power the woofers my bi-amp modded JRX115 cabs. The JBL woofers were replaced with 500w Eminance Kappa Pros. I push this amp to occasional clipping and haven't noticed excessive distortion. You would need to spend two times that amount on an amp to get 500w @ 8ohms / side. Nice job QSC!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bang for Buck a Great Amp!Great amp for the money. Sounds as goopd as any amp (PLX, XTI, etc) Using these in our monitor rig and all artists are very happy.

Could I connect this amp to A Yamaha RX-V475BL and how

Asked by: Cesardzm84
In order to connect this to a receiver, it will have to have preamp outputs via RCA. You will have to get the back of the Yamaha or its manual to see if it has this.

I'm looking to use this amp for a home theater application. I looked at a behringer amp EPQ2000 with basically the same wattage/RMS and $100 less however the reviews regarding fan noise have me looking now at this amp. How loud is the fan on this amp?

Asked by: SlywkaVision
Most PA style amps will have fan noise. The QSC has a variable speed fan which means it will only turn higher RPMs if the amplifier is being used for heavy loads, in which case you wouldn't hear the fan anyway.

Is this amp 2 ohm stable? Or even 2.66 ohm stable?

Asked by: Sage
QSC does not recommend anything lower than 4 ohm be used with this amplifier.

Are these specs correct?

You get 700 watts RMS x2 @ 4 ohm but only 850 watts RMS bridged @ 4 ohm? I would think you'd get more than that.
Asked by: Dizz E
According to the QSC website the specifications are correct. However, your logic does make sense.

Home audio: Will these amps be suitable for running a very powerful home subwoofer system?

I'm building a very powerful line array sub-woofer system and need power but I do not have $10,000 to throw down. Are the fans always running?
Asked by: VusstoppyPro
i do not believe the fans are running all the time unless they are silent running fans. QSC is a great brand. i once had to clean an old amp rack out in high school that someone urinated in (no joke) and this old QSC amp from the 80's was the only component that lived. not only that, but it still runs great as per my old stage teacher. QSC is probably my favorite brand of power amp.now, to this amp. this would be perfect for a sub woofer array due to the fact that even has a built in subwoofer crossover built in. it also has all the bells and whistles needed for the application you need it for. go for it. this is what you need.
