- Design Goals -

The idea to design the Unified Center Channel was brought about by my desire to build a center channel speaker to work with my home theater system. I use a pair of Dayton Budget speakers, designed by Wayne J., for my front main speakers, and wanted to come up with something that would match their timbre but still offer outstanding center channel performance. Since so many people have built the venerable DIII's, Dayton Budgets, Dayton II's, Dayton HT's, dB515's, and BR-1's, coming up with a CC design that would work with all of these seems like a project that would be of great interest to the DIY community.

A three-way design is a natural solution to the Center Channel design because of its superior off-axis response and reduced intermodulation distortion. By using an aperiodic vent in the midrange enclosure and generous amounts of stuffing, I was able to keep the overall size to a minimum. With the help of Curt C. on the crossovers, we were able to come up with a system that does match timbre with my Dayton Budgets quite well. This speaker is a great performer that meets all of the design goals and is relatively simple and easy to build.
