- Design Goals -
The goal of this project was to create a pair of large floorstanding
speakers that combine the best in high-fidelity sound and massive
output capabilities at a reasonable price. The kind of speaker that
can be used in an everyday home theater system or two-channel
audio system, but which can be cranked up for a classic house or
fraternity party.
To meet these overall goals, I had four main criteria from a design
standpoint. First, the speakers would need to have solid bass
out put down into the 30-40 Hz range to keep up with today's low frequency-heavy music. Second, the speakers needed to have a
relatively high sensitivity to allow them to get to party levels with
a modest amplifier. Third, the speakers should have good power
handling and excursion capabilities so they can handle a receiver's
bass boost or the power of large Pro-Sound amplifiers. Finally, I
wanted to keep the impedance benign enough so the speakers
could be driven with whatever form of amplifier is available, whether
it is a vintage 2-channel or an old Dolby Pro Logic receiver.
