Vifa P17WJ-00 6-1/2" Woofer
I have built a large number of systems using this venerable Vifa woofer. If you are looking for smooth, accurate and consistent performance, this is a great choice. It works equally well in sealed-box and quarter-wave, tapered transmission-line enclosures. In the TL design, the low Fs of this woofer allows it to produce really astonishing bass. The other really nice feature of this woofer is its exceptional midrange and uper-midrange performance. I highly recommend using it in a two-way design where the tweeter is crossed over around 4-5khz. Given all of the current buzz about full-range drivers (with their lack of phase-cancellation), I find that this approach yields much of the benefit of a full-range driver without the tradeoffs in low or high-end performance.

Goldwood GW-206/8 6-1/2" OEM Woofer 8 Ohm
It handles a lot of power, might actually be good for a sound reinforcement system. But the bottom end is not this drivers' strength. It has a strong midrange, almost too strong. Seems like more of a midrange (maybe midbase). Disappointed with it's performance in 2-way bookshelves. Probably OK for the price, but for a little more money, there are much better woofers of this size out there.

Pyramid W64 6-1/2" Pro Plus Midbass Woofer
Loud (94db/1w @1m) and clear. Works great for 100hz & up in .33 cubic foot enclosure (14.25H x 8.75W x 5.5D int dim). Add Goldwood GT-1005 piezo tweeter part #270-011, 20 ohm 20w resistor part #017-20, 2 piece wire mesh speaker grill part #260-422 and speaker terminal part #260-294 for a very great sounding speaker for $22.21! Use 2ea Goldwood GT-1016 piezo tweeters part #270-041 and two resistors for a center channel speaker in a .64 cubic foot enclosure (23H x 8.75W x 5.5D int dim) for $24.34! Compare to high end Klipsch speakers for clear high efficiency sound at a tenth of a the cost! Recently built a 5.1 surround sound theater system with a Dayton QT305-4 12" Quatro Series Subwoofer, flared precision port part #268-350, 2 piece 12" wire mesh speaker grill part #260-428 and Dayton SA240-B 240W Subwoofer Amplifier w/Boost part #300-805. Total cost including shipping was $338.86! It replaced a $800 Onkyo surround sound system and sounds much better for less than half the cost!

Built A 2 Way System Around This Woofer And was Very Surprised At Its Performance. Darned Good Bass And The Midrange Was Decent. Coupled With A High Performance Seas Tweeter and A Small Commercial 2 Way, 2600Hz Crossover, They Produced A Very Dynamic Sound. Like The Binding Post Hookup

Replacement woofers are a great addition to my small bookshelf speakers. Speakers were shipped and received within three business days and took all of five minutes to replace. They sound great!!!

Dayton DC160S-8 6-1/2" Classic Shielded Woofer
I have used this speaker in two projects I have built in the last year as my bass/midrange driver. The first time I heard it, after building a pair of Dayton III MTM speakers, I was overwhelmed by the quality of the reproduction. I used them again in a pair of db61's and was again very pleased with the results. Great bass reproduction, very clear and open midrange with excellent imaging and detail. I will use them again in future projects.

Dayton DC160S-4 6-1/2" Classic Shielded Woofer 4 Ohm
I have two of these in a box that is variable in volume from .95 to 1.25 cu feet, with two 11 inch 2" ID precision ports. At around .95 to 1.10 cu feet, these things sound phenomenal! I can't say for certain how high you want to cross these before they don't sound good because I have mine crossed at 375hz for a 3 way setup, but I wouldn't recommend much higher than 2000 (maybe 2500) hz. With a good crossover deisgn, you could probably stretch that, but if you keep these crossed relatively low (under 2500 or 2000hz), the quantity and quality of the sound coming out of them is just amazing. Crossed at the 375hz I have them at, they can drive all day at volumes too loud to be comfortable, and sound really, REALLY nice doing it. Try a pair of these if you're looking for a good workhorse driver. Be sure to check with the project showcases using these and other 6.5 dayton drivers, and check on the forums, you'll get a design you'll love!

Goldwood GW-6028 6-1/2" Butyl Surround Woofer 8 Ohm
Good sound over the factory Bose speaker that blew.

|
Dynavox LW6004PMR 6-1/2" Woofer
I like the sound because it is warm and not harsh like most 6.5" units on the market. The bass is ok, I would have liked the impression of more details but you either get a wam driver or detailed one... have not seen a driver with both.
Best part is, it does not need a crossover, sounds best without it !!

Goldwood GW-6024 6-1/2" Butyl Surround Woofer 4 Ohm
I used one for rear/midbass fill in low budget car system install in an old high milage car. It was a good psudo-match for an old Kicker Freeair having similar construction; bumped back, extended pole piece, high Xmax. High Qtc made it suitable for rear deck mounting. LP filtered them at 1kHz. Not great accuracy but easily handles 20W from the head unit, Kicker actually breaks up first under high volume, big bass. I would recommend it as a cost saving alternative for rear fill but probably not for main speaks due to colored tonality. Specs on box, Goldwood site and PE site all differed leading me to wonder about quality/process control at Goldwood. This would also make it hard to design a box for it. Great value compared to Superstore brand car speaks.

Peerless 835004 SDS 6-1/2" Woofer 4 Ohm

Goldwood GW-6PC-4 6-1/2" Heavy Duty Woofer 4 Ohm
Build quality is excellent at this price point. Tremendous midbass output. Used them in my car doors, should work well in rear deck IB installs as well. Good for techno, rap music.

Aurum Cantus AC-165 6-1/2" Carbon Fiber/Kevlar Woofer
This was the first pair of Aurum Cantus speakers that I have ever bought. I knew they made outstanding tweeters, but did not know they made drivers as well. I use my AC-165 6-1/2" Carbon Fiber/Kevlar Woofer in a small vented enclosure with a 1" tweeter. The speakers have good imagery and the bass response was quite substantial. Impressed to say the least.

Vifa P17SJ-00 6-1/2" Shielded Woofer
The sound is unbelievable. I have these in a ported tube speaker with a couple of neodym tweeters and they blow my infinity HT speakers away.
Well worth the investment.

Tang Band W6-1721 6-1/2" Underhung Midbass Driver
Truly high value and I'm glad to have found a reasonably priced mid-woofer fast enough to keep up with my Aurum Cantus G1s. Nothing like a big motor for acceleration! I had the milled baffles waiting thanks to reliable drawings. I broke them in with various input for 72 hours and let the games begin. The underhung suspension implementation and performance are a testament to this design approach. The result is a 6.5" mid-woofer with very low 2nd harmonic distortion, extended range and the ability to go flat to 40Hz in a reasonably sized enclosure (in-room & unequalized). I am well pleased with this product and I'll add it to my list of recommemdations from the TB product line.
What might I envision as a replacement for this fine product you ask? I'd sure like to hear this motor design with TB's Bamboo & Titanium cones. Beyond that, I'd pray for a stand-off between this underhung motor with Bamboo & Titanium cones against scaled up versions of TB's neodymium motor on their 4" Bamboo & Titanium drivers. Heard 'em? Gotta.
Until next time - Patrick.

Tang Band W6-789E 6-1/2" Woofer
I built a large (2cuft) 2 way vented speaker (w/3k dayton crossover and 1" tang band dome tweeter 25-302SH) to be powered by a T-amp. With less than 15 Watts driving it this woofer can produce some amazing low bass (flat down to 40 hz) AND has excellent sound quality up to the 3khz crossover point. Its now hooked up to my Yamaha receiver with even better results. I can listen to movies at theater volumes without needing a dedicated subwoofer. This two way speaker setup has some startling good imaging and SQ that took some getting used too. I thought an intruder was in my house the first time I heard vocals from these while I was in a different room.
Pros: Amazing low bass, excellent sound quality, high efficiency
Cons: Needs a big enclosure for good results, listed low power handling (they get plenty loud for those of us that value our hearing).

Audax AP170M0 6-1/2" Shielded Paper Cone Polymer Woofer
Not the strongest bass but adequate for most conditions. Main benefit is the ability for these speakers to fit into tight spots. If you have the room, better choices are available.
