Acousta-Stuf Polyfill 5 lb. Bag
In my "talk into the box through the speaker opening test," I've found that about 3/4 pound of Acousta-Stuff per cubic foot to be very effective. Stuffing absorbs resonances and adds mass to the air to make the box perform like a larger box. I've read that 1/2 pound per cubic foot is enough, but one industry expert my son works with says 1 pound per cubic foot is better and 1.5 pounds per cubic foot is not too much, particularly for subwoofers. I stick with 3/4 pound because this stuff is costly and 3/4 pound seems very effective. If you place one ear about 3 or 4 inches from the speaker opening you will think you have gone deaf in that ear. Any sound is absorbed by the AcoustaStuff, quite the opposite of the effect of an empty speaker box. The material comes fairly well compressed at about 2 lbs per cubic foot, so it takes an hour or two to manually shred the stuff into a fluff that is uniformly dense and can be compressed slightly into 3/4 pound per cubic foot.

Sonic Barrier 3/4" 3-Layer Damping Material w/PSA 18" x 24"
I bought one mat to split between two .5 cu ft. Parts Express finished hifi cabinets. After installation, there was substantial reduction in midrange frequency response variation. Peaks that measured +-2db were down to +-1db in the 500 - 1500hz area. It really smoothed out the midrange. Features gets 4.5 stars because the adhesive was not enough to keep the mat glued to the enclosure. After two weeks of use, I opened the enclosure and found half the mats had come unglued. Some two sided tape fixed the problem.

Sonic Barrier 1-1/4" 3-Layer Damping Material w/PSA 18 x 24"
I give this product only fair rating because although it does work quite well, when compared with conventional fiberglass insulation in identical large high-end vented type speaker enclosures, it was not that much better. In view of the rather high price and very heavy weight of the product, I m not sure it was worth it. I also found when experimenting with a scrap piece of the material for fire safety that it emitted an extremely toxic smoke when heated to melting temperature. I think I will just go with the fiberglass insulation for my other two identical cabinets. If it was priced much cheaper, I would say it s worth it. But it s a little too expensive for how much of an improvement I saw with it.
