Peavey PVi 4B 4-Channel Powered Mixer 100W
Peavey PVi 4B 4-Channel Powered Mixer 100W is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple, reliable, idiot-proofI recommended this to a client/ friend who opened a coffee-shop. He wanted to feature singer-songwriters and alternative musicians. Occasionally they have poetry "slams" or book-readings that require a little PA.This has worked out beautifully!...Here's why:ONE--- SIMPLICITY !When many different people must share an "in-house" PA, the last thing you want is a complex " full-featured" digital anything. Too many knobs intimidate tyros, and flummox waitresses who know nothing about audio.TWO--- MONOIf you need psycho-acoustic processing, you need stereo. But vocal and light music applications do not require or even benefit from stereo. For speech-intelligibility a mono system works just as well or better.FEW INS & OUTS---KISS principle. It is virtually impossible to hook this up wrong. That's great. Since someone new will plug into this almost every night, it has to be idiot proof.LOW POWER---How can low power be a good thing? Anytime you want the volume to be civilized in a small room. By selecting this small low-power system, you make it nearly impossible to blow people's heads off, especially if you select and position speakers properly. Whenever someone tries to turn this thing up too far, it let's them know NOT to do that with squeaks and squeals and low-rumbles.NO ANTI FEEDBACK...Sure, if you want to get the maximum volume from any monitor, anti-feedback is a good thing. But suppose your goal is to control the volume. Then this is a better deal. This may sound mean, but I assure you it is ultimately for every artist's own good.We WANT them to be embarrassed by poor mic technique. No amount of lecturing will ever teach a singer how to keep her mic away from the speakers. Two or three episodes of feedback in a public place will impress even the most torpid tyro. When their friends make painful faces & yell at them "DON'T POINT IT AT THE SPEAKER" a few times, they will learn!FAST SIMPLE INSTALLATION...We hung two decent passive speakers on the walls in FRONT of the little stage area., Put this on a mini coffee table next to the back wall, Plugged it in. Done.Honestly, finding studs for the speaker-mounting brackets took more time than hooking it up. Even with that, I had it up-and-running in about ten minutes.FUNKY OLD-SCHOOL APPEARANCE...There is nothing "sexy" or "hip" about this box. It is not brightly colored, not sleek. In fact, it is somewhat homely. Well, that is exactly what we want because no one will ever want to steal it. If someone did boost it, they would not get much for it, and our parsimonious club-owner could replace it easily, because of ...PRICE---I don't need to tell you how penurious club-owners are. This thing is cheap enough that it pays for itself in one night. Yet like all the Peavey gear I have used for decades, it is darned-near bullet-proof.It has worked perfectly 6 days a week for almost a year now. That includes 12 hours a day of programed background music, plus a variety of musicians, poets, rappers, buss-boys, ...you name it. It sounds just fine for light acoustic music and recorded background music at low volume. Vocals are intelligible. More than a dozen fledgling singers have suffered severe social derision because they initially couldn't handle a mic. That public humiliation made them more aware of mic technique, and therefore, made them better performers much sooner than any technical lecture.SO if PRICE, SIMPLICITY, Manageable volume, reliability, fast installation, idiot proof design are what you need, get one of these and a pair of decent passive speakers. Your patrons, audience, and eventually performers will all be better for it.
