S Wilcox from Lakewood, CO
I had read about the Spherex Xbox 5.1 a year or so ago -- many rave reviews, particularly as a low-cost speaker system that rivaled high-end components. But amidst all the high praise, there was an obvious and nagging design defect in the amplifier (hangs, burns). By the time I went to purchase a close-out system, they were all gone from the major retailers or internet stores. Fine, I said -- didn't want it anyway with the bad amp. But then I saw this deal. Although it is priced similar to some of the close out offers that included the amp, I went for it. I don't regret it at all. It is a fine sounding system with clarity and accurate reproduction -- a very spacious sound without a limited sweet spot. If you like the harsh, high treble engineered into many CDs these days, it'll please you. If you like the more subtle overtones of strings, woodwinds, and brass -- it reproduces them beautifully. The only thing missing is the psychoacoustic processing of the original amp for the deep bass. But even with an old surplus amp like I'm using for the subwoofer, it'll punch out rich bass to fill a medium sized room. You MUST fashion a panel to cover the amp opening in the sub-woofer. Without it, you get zilch on the low-end. I found an old chassis panel, cut it to size, drilled a hole for a connector, and then painted it flat black to match the case. I attached some insulation to the panel on the inside to deaden internal reflections and sealed it up.
Comes with five cables for pod speakers, but oddly, no screws for the handle! It came all carefully boxed in the original Spherex container... arrived with a little box damage, but no damage to components. Parts Express shipped exactly on the stated schedule. So if you're inclined to do a little handiwork, it's a good deal; you'll have a fine speaker system to go with your 5.1 amp.
