Surface Transducer Turns Virtually Anything Into A Speaker

Bought these to demo to my design group as a proof of concept. We are moving into a new realm with exciter speakers for permanant install (not these units, much more expensive ones). I removed the white basket completely along with the highpass capacitor. Used superglue to fix them under my desk (1.5" MDF, appox 20 sq ft). Used a 2Watt amplifier and ran them off my laptop. These little units REALLY need an EQ (email me at nickh@valleycommunications.com if you would like my settings). They sound good enough for me to get rid of my desk speakers (even subwoofer as the surface reproduces the rich bass of my music nicely). I do have some distortion at higher volume levels but that is from my amplifier. All and all I am very satisfied with these once said and done.

I bought these so that I can turn a project into speaker. I think the guy on Youtube is right on point with the two sheets of aluminum with foam board sandwiched between them. Works great in my application!

In order for these, or any exiters for that matter, to shine you really need to decouple the motor structure from the vibrating panel. The key is to use multiples and keep the weight of the panel as low as possible.

In my case, I used 8 exiters per side with the "feet" cut off and mounted to a wood spine. A laminated foam board (20"x30" each side, white Elmers brand found at Micheal's) has a very good stiffness/weight ratio which is essential for high and low end extension. This was glued directly to the voice coil and the panel was free to move back and forth like a traditional cone. The result was sound that was perfect for background music like Jazz. Surprisingly lifelike piano, cello, violin and guitar. Bass was enough to remain engaged to the music. A bit of EQ work made them even better. fairly efficient and controlled excursion. Will be trying the same panel cut in half (10"x30")in an attempt to increase high frequency extension.
