HiVi B3S 3" Shielded Aluminum Driver Square Frame

I used this speaker for my first attempt at a tapered quarter wave transmission line box. Used 1/2" MDF, cabinets came out to 7x7x27 with a line length of ~42". No crossover or filter. My buddy thought i was crazy putting such a small speaker in such a big box. I am amazed at the sound quality of this speaker in this box. I never thought such a small speaker could produce such a "big" sound...full bass, crisp mids and highs. Won't go super loud, but that is fine by me, as i live in an apartment.

I am no stereo expert, but when I popped one of the speakers in my XM boombox I turned to these for a substitution. They fit very close and greatly improved my bass and overall sound quality. These little guys will now be put to the test of 8 hours continuous play in a humid environment. So far they improved the boom in my little boombox!

I purchased this unit about 1 week ago and have been very impressed with the results. I gave the value category a 5 because this driver performs very well for the price.

As far as performance goes, I have been using this driver in a small open baffle (I decided to try this because it has a very high qts and I wanted to do something different with it than the Zaph design) and I have been very impressed. Definitely the best mid-range performance I have ever experienced (I am used to two-way Mid-woofer/tweeter designs which tend to lack in mid-range performance). As far as mid-bass and bass performance goes, it is a bit weak (due to physical size and the fact that a small driver often gets a small baffle) but otherwise a great driver. As far as full range goes, it excellent between 800hz and 7000hz. As I said, not really much bass (even in a sealed cabinet) and upper extension past 7000hz is a bit flaky (but could easily be remedied with a nice tweeter with a higher order x-over). I would rate performance as a mid-range within 800 - 7000 hz to be fantastic and performance as a full range to be pretty good. In a full range configuration I would remedy the bass problems before the tweeter problems but that is just me.

Overall: Great unit to experiment with and sounds wonderful in an OB (when used in the 800-7000hz range)
