This nicely made inductor is just the thing where a little extra DCR is desirable or at least not going to hurt anything, compared to a mag-core unit with heavier wire. It has convenient mounting tabs that do not appear in the photo.
I'm not sure why anyone would want a solid core, because a laminated core minimizes electrical eddy losses.
This would work better, however, if the layers were insulated from each other, which they are not. Not insulating the laminations makes them almost just for show, but is still probably an improvement over a solid core.
