Dayton SSMB24 24" Speaker Stand Pair Square Steel Base

I bought these stands after not being able to find the Wood Tech MU-24. These have a nice look and are very sturdy. The finish is the rough, almost truck-bed liner black. It looks good from a few feet away.

I cannot recommend these stands because the width of the base is not wide enough for the height. These stands are very easy to knock over. The rear spikes are closer together than the front, which also really hurts the stability. I was extremely disappointed in this pair of stands.

I was somewhat suprised that the stands required assembly since it was not mentioned in the product description. I was expecting all welded construction. Having said that; the stands seem to be substantial and were easy to assemble. I did add some LOCTITE to keep the screws from loosening and the stand from coming apart. I was considering using some RTV at the ends of the tubes to really make sure the stands did not vibrate loose but I didn't have any and wanted to get the stands set up. You are limited to filling the two smaller tubes in each stand with sand or shot. I imagine shot would add another 10+ pounds per stand. I did not fill the tubes since the stands seemed to be stable enough for the speakers I'm using. You'd have to fill the tubes before putting the top plate on. The stands are on a hardwood floor so I have not needed the spikes. The spikes provided for feet are not that sharp and would not penetrate carpet to reach the subfloor which is the whole purpose of having spikes. Decent value for the sale price.

I had read mostly positive reviews of these stands, but had I tried them first, I would not have bought them. They are too wobbly on carpeting, can't be filled with sand (or for that matter anything smaller than lead shot the size of giant olives because of the holes for cables), and won't support heavy speakers (I have POLK LSi9's at 32 lb. each). Also the top plate is quite small, so a speaker with a larger
footprint won't be as secure.
On the plus side, they are attractive and well-made, and at $69.50/pr. are a good price.
Just be more careful than I was in shopping for the right speaker stands !!
