The HDMI connection standard offers very rewarding high definition audio and video playback—when it works. When it doesn't work, HDMI is very frustrating. Screen sparkle (pixilation), intermittent audio and video, or HDCP sync issues may result from long cable length or cable kinks, low bus voltage, or corrupted digital signals (which result in complete signal loss). HDMI was developed using Transmission Minimized Differential Signaling, TMDS for short. TMDS requires a cable characteristic impedance of 50 ohms (100 ohms differential) for correct signal decoding, and each piece of equipment within the HDMI chain must match this impedance. A simple HDMI switch, for instance, places multiple ports in parallel dropping the impedance. Long HDMI cables increase cable impedance due to the high frequency capacitance from skin effect. Impedance mismatch manifests itself, within the digital domain, as signal reflections causing bit errors (where a 1 is read as a 0). Dayton Audio's simple solution for just about any HDMI problem is the small HDEQ HDMI stabilizer. The HDEQ installs at the very end of the HDMI chain (female jack on one side; male plug on the other) and is completely passive. Impedance is restored to 50 ohms (100 ohms differential) and, in most cases, restores the pristine condition of your HDMI signal instantly. Plug-and-play installation without software.
  • Passive device that corrects cable impedance mismatches
  • Plug-and-play
  • A simple quick fix for many HDMI problems
  • Virtually eliminates screen sparkle (pixellation)

Worthless HDMI tool

Mako454 from RI

Did nothing except block the video completely. It was immediately shipped back for credit. I ordered an Apogee 3-1 HDMI splitter for $10 less(as others have recommended) and that fixed ALL my HDMI problems!!

Failed to meet expectations, much less hope.

Short Circuit from Grand Rapids, MI

Pushing 720p over a 10m category 1 HDMI cable was working somewhat well from my PS3, and hardly at all from my PC. I purchased this in the hopes of avoiding having to purchase a more expensive HDMI cable, and in the hopes of avoiding purchasing an HDMI repeater.

While using this device, the sparkle in the PC's signal cleared up, but I still had color offset issues; Each color channel would be a column offset from the next, which made using pixel-precise apps like text terminals and browsers difficult on the HDMI display; I kept getting headaches.

On top of that, the PS3's signal seemed simply incompatible with it. Every five or ten minutes, the TV would lose signal sync and reinitialize. Sometimes it wouldn't come back at all. That gets rather grating while watching suspenseful or action-based movies, and gets rather embarrassing in front of friends. Removing the device left me with occasional, but seemingly less frequent, desync issues.

I wound up purchasing a repeater, which cleared up both the problems with the PS3 signal and the PC signal. However, when I added the repeater, I had to remove this device for both the PS3 and PC signals.

Don't look at this device as a cheap fix for your HDMI problems; It may very well just be forty dollars you waste when you needed something that costs just twenty dollars more.
