A must for optimum sub performance Friday, February 22, 2008
Darryl from Los Angeles, CA
I have a 15" dvc sub with a Bash 500 subwoofer amplifier that benefits hugely from these pups (one per voice coil works much better). Most new school "experts" will offer that today's amps with active crossovers no longer require chokes, and in fact will suffer due to the added resistance. Yes and no. The benefit lies in how much better your amp will perform given the big increase in back EMF. It's almost always a plus that outweighs the minus, moreso with a good choke. My experience is with 4 and 8ohm drivers; with a 2 ohm dvc sub, the choke/resistance factor admittedly looms larger, the results for which I cannot attest to.
In any case, it is no accident names like JL Audio and Tang Band (and even some of Dayton's) have built a reputation or are critically acclaimed, as their subs are designed with lots of inductance. The chokes are a cost factor, unfortunately, (price of copper is going through the roof!), but they sure do make a difference. One try will convert you doubters!
