specs are hyped up Wednesday, September 23, 2009

i was planning on buying 4 of these for my DJ rig because of their CLAIMED 93dB efficiency. that has to be the PEAK efficiency & not the average and if i had to guess, it would either be at around 200Hz or over 3kHz.
these speakers sound no louder than my tiny NHT 89dB superzeros which actually put out MORE bass at the same power level with just 4 1/2" woofers.
the reviews that say these speakers are "bass shy" are actually too kind. there is a complete ABSENCE of bass along with an annoying mufled sounding midbass resonance. they just weren't able to improve over my little NHTs in any way. i wouldn't be surprised if the output power was a little optimistic too.
these speakers are dirt cheap and sound it. sadly, i'm returning the pair i tested about 15 minutes until i couldn't take their resonant sound on spoken words anymore. they're THAT BAD.
they DO have heavy duty cabinets (was expecting a light plastic shell) and the treble is very clear, but these speakers are all but useless full range and even with a sub, you'd have to crossover high to get past the resonant peak in the midbass which my 5 1/4" missions can run circles around.
except for their nice tweeters, i'd rate the pyles as similar sounding to small plastic japanese bookshelf "boombox" stereo system speakers with small woofers. these sure don't sound anything like the 6 1/2" woofers an old pair of JBLs i used to own.
anyone who has a decent stereo will be unimpressed by these speakers. i found trying to listen to the news through them to be unbearable.
