low quality; iphone immediatly disconnects

I bought this as a secondary cable for travel, but I've never been able to use it. I have a first generation iPhone, and when I use this cable to connect to my laptop, it immediately drops connection. Twice it made it as far as halfway though the sync process. My original cable works great, so I know its not a problem with other factors.

Despite the description otherwise, this allows my ipod touch (2nd Gen) to sync with itunes. Very good value for a cable. Apple sells a cable like this for $20. Ouch
