Dayton DC28FT-8 1-1/8" Silk Dome Truncated Tweeter

Replaced my factory Infinity tweeters. Big fan of silk domes, because metal domes can sometimes be over powering. Very natural sounding in the low end, but these seemed to lack in the upper high end.

I have had a pair of Paradigm monitor 7 speakers for many years and have replaced the tweeters twice with paradigm stock tweeters at $100 dollars a piece because at the 1.8 k crossover point the stock tweeters could not handle the midrange output. Got tired of paying that much for tweets I knew would blow. I have tried 2 different brands and been dissatisfied. I talked to tech support and ordered the dayton soft domes and WOW. They are very smooth and handle the added midrange of the 1.8 k crossover point with ease since they have the resonant chamber added to the back of the pole piece on the magnet. My Monitor 7's have never been this smooth and transparent in the the midrange and treble range. Even the bass and midbass frequencies improved to my ears. I have had friends come over and they are now wanting to try to upgrade the drivers in their speakers as well. I am so impressed that I am going to plan to start building new speaker designs for myself and friends since I have exstensive knowledge in carpentry and am learning crossover design as well. Your technical department is awesome as well and really helped me with my choice. Very good driver for high end use.

I bought these since reviewers were saying these were Morel knock-offs. I m not sure if they are since I still prefer the Morels (the Morels seem more balanced, less bright and just sound more realistic to me). I installed these Dayton s in a pair of bookshelf Celestions with aluminum tweeters, keeping the original woofer and adding a 1/2 pound of Acousta-Stuf to each speaker. I chose these Dayton s over the Morels since they required less modification to the cabinet.

The build seems solid, but I do have an issue with where the terminals are placed. Since they are side mounted you either have to cut a bigger hole or cut out a small rectangle on the side of the hole. I think the 1 and 1/8 tweeters sound much deeper than 1 models due to more surface area and I would not even consider a 1 inch soft dome.

Soft domes are way better than metal domes. They don t ring like aluminum, they aren t harsh, and they are a lot smoother than metal domes. I think these $22 tweeters are better than just about any metal dome that comes stock on a pair of store bought speakers that cost hundreds. It s sad to see that so many manufactures have chosen to make their tweeters out of cheap aluminum (I guess the marketing materials sound fancier with aluminum rather than fabric. )
