Decent Woofer Wednesday, July 1, 2009
John from Ann Arbor, MI
I purchased a pair of these woofers for use in a 2.1 speaker system. The build quality on these units is excellent--the unit is heavier than I expected and feels very solid, and the solder tabs seem very durable. All considered, I was impressed with the quality of these woofers for the price.
When I mounted this woofer in the enclosure I had built (0.25 cu. ft., sealed, filled with Acousta-Stuf), my initial impression was that it sounded very bright. The sound was very crisp, clear, and accurate, but the spectral balance just didn't sound quite right to me. Also, for music with a lot of dynamic compression such as heavier rock and metal, this woofer didn't quite seem to have the kick necessary to reproduce the drums to their full extent. I built another test box to try the woofer in (this one 0.14 cu. ft., which is the recommended volume in the Parts Express catalog), and the conclusions were the same.
I suspect that the brightness of this driver is due largely to the aluminum phase plug. The purpose of the phase plug is to prevent distortion by reflecting high-frequency waves (which are largely produced near the center of the cone) outward along the axis of the driver. As a result, the woofer sounds brighter than it normally would. Also, it sounds very different when listening on-axis versus 15 to 30 degrees off-axis.
In conclusion, I would say that this woofer is a good buy, for its clarity and its solid build quality. However, it sounded just a little too bright for my taste. I suspect this is something that might be helped significantly with a proper crossover (i.e. it should be crossed over at 2.5 kHz or less, and probably with a slope of 12 dB per octave or more).
