Rated 1 out of 5 by from Surprisingly bad, given all the positive reviews.I wanted to consider every possible way I could have erred before writing this review. But after troubleshooting everything and ensuring correct connections, it's this crossover. It's just terrible!!!!!!I have an old JVC SK-101. Cab is good, speakers were blah, the old crossover is almost nonexistent. Just two nonpolar electrolytic caps point soldered to the middle and tweeter. I decided to upgrade all the speakers (paying mind to correct impedance and efficiency etc) and then replaced the crossover with this model. At first I thought my speaker upgrades were wrong. But I put back the originals and it was still awful. So I eliminated this crossover and replaced the original caps. OK, I was back to my initial sound. Then I replaced my old speakers with the new ones using my old crossover and there was a marked improvement. Hence, the new crossover was throwing everything off!The bass reproduction feels plenty accurate, but the middles and highs are just an unsubtle indeterminable wreck and impossible to listen to. Reading what others wrote, apparently it might be worth it to swap out the 3.3uf electrolytic caps with some mylar ones instead and that will improve the highs. I haven't tried it. But in its stock configuration I would say strongly pass on it and consider other models.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good choice!A decade or so ago I ended up with some 80s era empty Sansui S-1000 cabinets, pressboard boxes so nothing special. I stuffed them with the least expensive components I could find at the time and they were OK for my shop bar. Recently the left side went out . It read 100+ ohms. I checked the hi, mid and woofer and all checked 8 ohms, so I figured the crossover, and I decided to give a pair of these a shot rather than take my chance on an auction site. After I put them in the left side was still out! The fuse I had put on the + side had read 100+ ohms, so I had figured it was just continuity, I mean a fuse either works or it's blown open, right? Wrong. I replaced the fuse and I was back in business, duh. Seriously, in 50 years of playing with electronics, I'd never seen that.Let's face it, if you're considering this crossover you're like me, looking to get out cheap. I don't claim to be an "audiophile", but I spent the mid 70s into the 90s doing R&R monitor mixing and lighting, plus pro and consumer electronics repair at the component level, so I have my ideas about what sounds good. These crossovers perked up my poor man's speakers, I actually get some thump out of the woofers I had previously classified as "you get what you pay for". Plus, I'm too old and lazy to want to bring those speakers back down, put the old crossovers back in and do an A/B comparison. I did mention the shop has a bar, right? I prefer to expend my efforts on practicing mixology and listen to old R&R, thankyouverymuch.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good PriceI've bought several of these crossovers over the years, the last time I bought them they had 50v caps. I'm glad PE upgraded the caps to 100v. I recommend replacing the 3.3uf electrolytic caps with Dayton poly 3.3uf caps, they really make a difference with the mids and highs. One star off becasue the actual crossover points are 630 Hz and 4300 Hz

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great valueI was not expecting too much other than basic functionality from these crossovers since these are after all the most economical units parts express sells. However they seem to be doing an excellent job in My budget 3-way speaker project. The only caveat being that driver selection is critical since the cross over points are fixed. So be sure to match your speakers.Or pay a little more and get the units that allow you to choose the crossover points for the mids and tweets.

Are the crossover points 800/5000 Hz exactly? If not, where specifically do they crossover?

Asked by: RH84
These crossovers use textbook 8 ohm filters. The actual crossover points will depend on the driver impedance at that frequency, but for most 8 ohm drivers that have a DCR between 6.5-7.5 ohms, the crossover points will be within about 10% of these figures.

What would happen if I hooked up a 4-ohm woofer, 8-ohm mid, and 8-ohm tweeter?

Asked by: MCTCA
It would force the lower crossover point to move upwards since it is designed to carry only 8 ohm drivers. Feel free to contact our tech support for more help with this question, tech@parts-express.com or 800-338-0531 x1.
