Parts Express 3.5mm Slim-Plug Stereo Male to 1/4" Mono Male Adapter Cable 6 ft.
Does this cable actually combine the L and R stereo into a single mono channel, or does the mono just connect the L -OR- R channel and leave the other one disconnected/unused?
This does not combine both, it uses one or the other and leaves the other disconnected.

do you have any cables that are 3.5 male to 1/4 male, mono on both ends? I cannot seem to find that common cable anywhere on your site.
Unfortunately we do not have any that are mono on both ends. A stereo will work in place of a mono, so this cable will work for your application.

Do you have any that are shorter, 2-3 ft?
At this time we are only carrying the one size of 6 feet.

Those selling $100+ DI's say never sum your stereo signal to mono with a simple cable or parallel DI jack for risk of damaging your device. Are stereo-to-mono DI's really needed? Or is a cable like this into a basic DI safe enuf? U still get pad/lift/etc
It depends on the device but ideally you should not connect the left and right channels to each other. If you did this on your stereo you would probably blow your unit. But phones and low power devices are different and some cases will have built-in protection just in case you you do connect the two channels together. Many people have used cables like this for years without any problems but if you turn up the volume and you hear distortion then you should probably switch to a Stereo to mono DI or some other type of mixing device.
