PA Knock-Down Trapezoid Birch Speaker Cabinet for 15" Driver
PA Knock-Down Trapezoid Birch Speaker Cabinet for 15" Driver is rated 4.125 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very simple assemblyI needed some quick and sturdy boxes for some JBL D-130 woofers and these did the trick quite nicely. I finished them with black "Restore" deck paint after rounding off all the edges with a router and 80 grit sand paper. My main advise is to cut your holes for your horn and ports on the baffle before assembly. I only wish that Parts Express offered a pre-formed grill that fit these cabinets with no modifications required.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not a bad set of boxes.Been doing sound for a long time and if you load these with the right components these boxes rock. Just recently took out a couple of 22xt peavey drivers and newer black widow 15's out of an old sp3 cabinet that was finally falling apart and recycled everything into these newer and much lighter boxes. Ended up having a nice pair of pretty much brand new speakers. Using peavey sp2g crossovers which work fairly well with these boxes. Instead of using port tubes I cut slots for handles that act as porting. Overall was a quick and easy project to complete. Also, if you are using heavy duty speakers that move a lot of air you MUST seal every joint in these boxes with silicon and use a generous amount of glue on all cuts and tabs. The only suggestion I would make is a better system for grill covers to be mounted. These boxes are made for a P.A. not home stereo so a steel mesh or expanded metal front should be used not grill cloth.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rumble FilldirtA great choice for me.Pretty good Birch with very few voids visible on the edges.Cut edges require a little sanding but fit together well after some TLC.Each box eats up a whole pint of wood glue and a whole tube of caulk, but is very leak free and strong in the end.I added some 1" oak dowel rods in 2 places as bracing and after that the cabs were rock solid. They ring like a bell when I rap on them.I also doubled up the baffle as I used these for 12" woofers and had to make a smaller speaker hole.Adding a layer of 3/4 Baltic Birch to the baffle made the boxes very stiff. They ate up a gallon of texture paint and a quart of oil based primer, but now they look awesome.I recommend these to anyone who doesn't have access to a complete wood shop, or as anyone's first DIY project. These boxes rock with 12's, I can't imagine them with 15's installed.Just for the cost of wood, these are a good deal.Very satisfied,Rumble

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Needs better plywoodThe cabinet enclosure volume is too little for most 15" drivers, if you correctly subtract the amount of space the driver itself occupies inside. So I put in 4 12" as two pairs of clamshelled isobaric pairs. And I added a thick fromt removable baffle board. You can get decent plastic or metal cabinet corners for 15 degreee trapezoids, and they make it look a lot more finished. But in the end, this kit is screaming desperately to be made of better plywood. I had no idea they made plywood this cheap.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good concept that needs more thought in it's executionThis is not just some kit that you can slap together and expect good results. First, you need the right tools. You're going to need to take your time with it. After getting your holes cut for ports, mid, tweeter, pocket handles and terminal cup, which could take anywhere from 1-3 hours, it will take about an hour to assemble. My advice from actual experience with this product is to assemble the cabinet as directed, with one exception. Don't glue the top of the cabinet on until you are finished loading your drivers, crossover network and have given it a good test run. This made my job so much easier because I had free access to the inside walls of the enclosure. After I was all set up and ready to go I cued up some music and set the mixer gain at a moderate level and punched up the bass. Vibration. I heard an obnoxious rattling that just kind of droned. I lowered the volume. Even at low volume there was undesirable noise emminating from the cabinet. After some investigation I discovered that the front baffle was flexing between the woofer and midrange. This is my main reason for advising to not glue on the top panel. After my little test run I simply removed the top and installed a T-brace with the top of the T pushing against the spot that was rattling. It took all of 5 minutes to solve the problem. I think including a brace in the kit would improve customer satisfation since some people might think it's not so great a product because they don't have the experience to deal with a problem like this.It is a strong, lightweight box when finished and I am very please with it's performance now that the bugs are worked out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quick and simple kit.If you are looking for a speaker enclosure kit that is well made and easy to assemble then look no further, but if you are looking for an enclosure for high fidelity use then keep looking. This is a very well made kit that that is easy and quick to assemble, but as one reviewer said it is hardly void free. I found the included wood screws were long enough, but the diameter is too small and the Phillips head is shallow and does not fit well with any size bit I tried. Instead, I used 1.25" coarse thread dry wall screws and with the proper clutch setting on my cordless drill they can be flush or counter sunk perfectly. Use lots of wood glue and caulk the inside seams and you will have a pretty decent enclosure in no time at all. I used the Dayton ST385-8 (part number 295-130) and left the enclosure sealed. After adding 3lbs. of poly-fill, 2" egg crate foam on the rear and side interior surfaces and a couple of cross braces the results were pretty good considering this enclosure is too small for this woofer. With a little boost at 40hz, bass extends low enough for most music recordings. This is a great kit for PA use or for someone who can't build their own enclosure but I think the price is a little high for what you get. Still, it is well engineered and for it's intended purpose it works perfect.

Can this cabinet be used as a pa subwoofer ?

would it work as a subwoofer with dayton pa380 or eminence kappa lfa ,was looking for at least 40 hrtz and up , what kind of ports?
Asked by: secrets
You would likely want a much bigger box for PA use. But if you had to, you can visit an enclosure and port calculator by googling subwoofer port calculator and punching in the specs like the size of the box (2.75 ft3), frequency desired, and the designers specs of the woofer. It would then tell you the port size and length. Best of luck on your project!

Are the cab dimensions correct?

Internal volume does not work out. I factored in the total sidewalls, and fronts and backs, and I guessed at a 1.5 " recess at the front of cab. My gut feeling is that the external depth must be about 18" total, including the recess, or else they figured the volume wrong. According to my speaker design program, I get an internal volume of 3.89 cu.ft., which is a huge difference from the 2.75 cu.ft stated in the specs. Which figures are correct, the volume, or the box size? Thanks, Manny
Asked by: Manny
Thank you for pointing out the issue. The actual depth is 17-1/8", making the listed volume correct. The copy has been updated.

How much room is over the 14" cut?

I am planning on building two 3-way home theater speakers using two studio pro 15" speakers I got from a friend and run them with two studio pro 8" speakers as the midrange and horn loaded tweeters for the highs I want to know will there be enough room in these boxes for all of that plus a single 4 inch port tube?
Asked by: Charles Dehart
With a 15" woofer mounted, you're going to be left with about 13" vertically, and the baffle is about 16.5" across. Most likely enough room for an 8" mid and a small horn tweeter.

IS this made in a size for 2 15" drivers with a 2" horn

Asked by: wb251
No, but you can still use a 2" horn. Either the B&C ME60 or the Eminence H2EA will fit nicely. Just be sure to brace the back of the 2" driver.
