Morel MW-266 8" Poly Woofer
Morel MW-266 8" Poly Woofer is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from An overlooked gem, when you apply it rightThis woofer is a little quirky so it requires a bit of finesse to squeeze full performance out of it. The irregularities in the 500-1500 Hz range can be fixed by applying "edge treat" - namely Elmers glue around the inside lip of the surround, just enough to stiffen the joint between cone and surround. With this, response is very smooth. Also, cone breakup at high frequencies is better controlled than 90% of woofers. You can't really use the MW266 in a vented box because the Q is too high. A little-known great application for high Q woofers is using a transmission line. My design, you could almost categorize as labyrinth, 9 feet long. I have light stuffing in the first 1/3 of the line and no damping material after that. The combo of woofer and box extends down to about 30 Hz.All of the above make for a system with creamy smooth midrange that's very easy to cross over. The CAT378 tweeter is a great match. Finally, this woofer is nearly indestructible. Very solidly built.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still Playing Hard After 23 Years!I bought 2 of these MW-266 with Butyl Rubber Surrounds, in a 4 OHM version in 1990.. These were mounted in custom enclosures in a 1989 Pontiac Sunbird GT Turbo until it got totalled. I was the manager- and a installer- at a Car Stereo Boutique at that time. Unfortunately, these 2 MW-266's burned up when a Carver M-180 Bridged car amp failed and overloaded. Those are now big magnets on my circuit breaker box that hold tools (SEE PICTURES).I also bought 4 of these woofers back in 1989. They were the 8" MW-220, 8 OHM version with a foam surround [] . They were mounted in a sealed subwoofer cabinet with with 4 sealed compartments . I designed and crafted the enclosure to custom fit a 1987 Nissan Pulsar NX. After that 2 of these (SEE PICTURES) are in a custom home subwoofer enclosures in speaker towers I built for my current Home Theater System, and they are still performing great after 24 years too! The other 2 are waiting to go into my new car system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from if you listen to Jazz or Funk, these are perfectI was looking for some replacement drivers for a Jamo push/pull sub unit and initially could not find anything that would fit as I was limited to 3 inch depth on the driver size.I IM'd Parts Express one afternoon and they quickly identified these for me. Terrific service and I went for them. Very fast delivery to the UK and after a little modification got these fitted in the Jamo housing. The quality was instantly noticable. Smooth and precise bass had been returned to my system.I agree with the 2 other reviewers, and highly recommend them, particularly if you listen to Jazz (both acoustic or electric) but they are also equally at home home with Drum and Bass, quiet remarkable, buy them!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth even lows, high power handling, loud!Very sensitive and fast, these drivers reproduce low-frequencies loud and clear. Characteristics that disappear with bigger woofers suddenly come to life with these things. Be careful! They are addictive! At this price, they are one of the best addictions you can possibly have. You can design a killer home system with these in a box that doesn't eat up real estate, dry your bank account or anger your spouse. I used two of these plus two Morel EM428 4" DPC Cone Midrange in a single-sealed stereo-cabinet for live Jazz guitar. A 300 watt QSC amp and TC electronic preamp complete the system. Trust me... it's sweet! And at a mere 20lbs for the cab, my back thanks me. Bass players should not overlook these for acoustic bass! Very natural sounding, acoustic friendly response! Beautiful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from They're Morel's...what more needs to be saidI think all Morel drivers are definitely among the most precisely controlled drivers available at their repective price-point and rival drivers costing many times this amount, but their woofers and mid-woofers are really stand out in the type of bass they produce. Never muddy or fatigueing and are extremely fast. I consider them to be "control freaks" in a good way.

Morel MW-266 8" Poly Woofer

I'm looking at this woofer for a 2-way system using the Dayton .75 ft^3 enclosure. I'm concerned that the enclosure is too small. Would it do well enough if the enclosure is filled with insulation, or should I look at other woofers like the HiVi D8.8?

Asked by: SpeakerQuestion
It depends on what you want from the woofer. That volume will work as long as it is sealed and heavily stuffed, but it will have a pretty early roll off around 60-70 Hz. If you want more extension, porting a different woofer would probably be the best. The D8.8 will also work ported or sealed, but in order to get a decent tuning frequency the port may be too long to fit in the box.

What is the Basket / Frame Material of it? It does not mention on the product page. Thanks.

Asked by: Partexfans
This uses a stamped steel frame.

So Should i use 5ohms for my 1khz crossover point instead of 8ohms? Since 8ohms inst until 3khz? Erse online crossover calculators ask for low pass impedance, so if i want a 1k low pass i should use 5ohms instead of the nominal 8ohms of the driver right?

Asked by: JakeCc
Yes that is correct.

Should I use 5ohms in my crossover for 1khz for lowpass w/ this woofer instead of 8ohms since  the impedance magnitude chart for it is rated at about 5ohm for 1khz? 8ohm would be about 3khz which would be to high to cross this woofer. using Erse calcs

Asked by: JakeCc
Most crossover modeling programs will use the DCR of the driver instead of the nominal impedance. This would provide more accurate crossover values for the driver if you have no way of modeling with the full driver impedance file.

Sorry for not clarifying, I have the Morel CAM558 Soft Dome Mids (you guys offered for a limited time)crossed at 1khz and Ill be using the Morel CAT308 Soft Dome Tweeters at 4khz for a 3way system. All 2nd order slopes, Any foreseen problems? Thanks!!!!!!

Asked by: JakeCc
There should be no issues with those crossover points using those drivers.

Would this woofer be okay crossed at 1k with a morel dome? 2nd order crossover, i just worried about reaching excursion limits to early.

Asked by: JakeCc
We really don't have any dome tweeters that will handle a second order crossover at 1k unfortunately. The crossover point has no effect on cone excursion.
