Morel CAT 378 1-1/8" Soft Dome Horn Tweeter

Morel's CAT378 features a hand treated 1-1/8" soft dome, horn loaded for higher efficiency and high dynamic range without power compression. The magnet assembly is vented into a damped rear chamber to lower resonance and to eliminate "honking" at lower frequencies. Latest evolution of the popular MDT-37 tweeter.

Morel CAT 378 1-1/8" Soft Dome Horn Tweeter
Morel CAT 378 1-1/8" Soft Dome Horn Tweeter is rated 4.8333 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent tweeterI installed this tweeter in a 1x12" bass guitar cabinet and it provides a perfect balance for the high-end. Crossed over at 3.5k.Great price for a tweeter the handles this kind of power and abuse.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from High Output in a small package.I'm not a fan of compression drivers for critical listening at high levels or in larger rooms where it really has to sound clear. These do a great job in those areas. Very high clarity and very smooth frequency response at high output levels when crossed over properly. I have had these for over a year and they have been ridden hard and they have exceeded my expectations. I have them in a MTM configuration bi-amped with a Nexia SP doing the crossover, EQ, and timing. Driving them with a Crown 300W channel per driver.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent TweeterI bought the Fluance SX-6 which has high marks but I missed my Morel tweeter from my other floorstanding unit I built. In the process, I changed the woofer to the Danish built Peerless HDS 5.25" PPB with this tweeter. The crossover is 3000 Hz, and I swear this speaker would compete with any 5" speaker made. The bass is solid, the detail is amazing, and the highs are smooth and airy. The speaker now has the sound in front of the speaker, rather than inside. I give the Fluance people credit for building some solid fine looking cabinets for a bookshelf. Although my son likes the sound of mine, he's determined to give his $500 on imported bookshelves. It seems to take a few years for people to realize those imported speakers use the same drivers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! (or, "My HI-FI PA rig)Not the usual application but.. I had some old Peavy DL10's, I had blown the piezo tweeters(thank God!). They were pretty rough sounding anyway so I rebuilt them with a MCM Select 125W 10 inch and some Goldwood softdomes from Parts Express. Much better! Even compared somewhat to HI FI speakers. So I got a better PA amp- Adcom GFA535, 65Wrms,(old school hi fi) and promptly blew one of the Goldwoods. My fault really, using those in a PA environment was a poor choice. So I upgraded again to these Morels and crossed them at about 3K. Holy Moly- these cabinets sound awesome! Best little PA I've ever heard! Better, more musical than the Bose dipole PA rig! Our acoustic instruments sound soooo detailed! These tweeters are bright so coupling them with a PA style woofer with a healthy SPL made for a really good match. Amazed. I would buy these for small PA application again in a heart beat. I also use these speakers for home listening too as I believe they sound way better than most typical hi fi speakers. From hard rock to classical- my cheopo PA cabinets are sounding better than my old Polks! SACD player into the Adcom with Dark Side of the Moon- blew me away. Mozart- you can hear the actual concert hall itself and not just the orchestra. Killer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Design EffortThe folks at Morel have captured a robust design, with high power handling and in this tweeter's case, a horn-type sound that helps a tad with timing and has a good dispersion...Great ergonomics and a tight, flush fit. The heavy weight construction avoids vibration and buzzing from high volume and heavy bass. These tweeters can be loud and in cases need to reduce volume to match bass. That can likely be tamed by using resistors, a parametric eq or an active crossover system if one can afford that route...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect, if you know how to tame itMorel goes out of their way to show with a simple 6dB crossover, this tweeter delivers a flat response that easily blends with a woofer. With some extra effort it's even nicer. This tweeter is efficient and usually requires a resistor to pad it down. I put a 0.5 to 1.5 uF capacitor in parallel with the resistor, which brings out the very highest frequencies above 15K, giving an "etched" quality to the highs, somewhat compensating for the midrange emphasis of the horn.I matched it to a MW266 woofer with tweeter below the woofer. In situ, the tweeter is slightly off axis from the listener position and the capacitor makes up for it.The CAT378 is a descendant of the classic Dynaudio D28 and Morel MDT28. It has dynamic range to burn, tremendous clarity, and does well with 6db crossovers and as low as 2000Hz crossover point. The horn is good for time alignment - which is more important than most people give it credit for.I recommend going out of your way to flush mount this tweeter so there are no edges or discontinuities. Router the hole so the flange sits flush with the box. Mount the tweeter off center so distance from center to each cabinet edge is different, which will dilute diffraction effects. Round the edges of the box if at all possible. I put a 6" felt diffraction ring around it too. The extra attention to detail gives extraordinarily smooth response and resolution.I've included a graph of the response I achieved with the Morel MW266.

I am going to put this in a bass rig with this Eminence Legend CB158 speaker and need a recommendation on a crossover. Thanks http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LegendCB158/

Asked by: bassman5489
I would recommend a crossover point of 2,500 Hz second order for this combination.

Do these drivers need to be matched or altered to match by a tech or are they good to go out of the crate?

Asked by: stoodioratt
These will be within 5% tolerance of each other right out of the box, matched pairs are not required.

How well will this blend with an altec lancing 420A in a 872b madrid ?

Original tweeter working and replaced old cap 6.2 first order, but still no joy.
Chances are it will work fairly well with is semi horn loaded design. Unfortuantely there is only one way to know for sure whether you will like it or not and that is to try it.

What is the cut out size for this tweeter?

Asked by: Hugh
On our site, the "A" dimension is overall diameter, "B" is the cutout size, and "C" is mounting depth. For this particular item, the cutout needs to be 2.32", which is just a smidgen more than 2-5/16", or approximately 59mm.
