Knock-Down MDF 1.25 cu. ft. Subwoofer Cabinet for Dayton Audio 10" Ultimax Subwoofer

Even the easiest do-it-yourself subwoofer can turn into an arduous project; from uneven cuts, to measuring mistakes. CNC knock-down cabinets make it easy for the beginner to end up with amazing finished results without all of the time and effort necessary to perfect your woodworking skills. This cabinet is designed for speaker builders and designers who don't have access to expensive tools or a woodshop.

This particular cabinet is designed specifically for the Dayton Audio 10" Ultimax subwoofer, but works for any subwoofer with an overall diameter of 10-3/4" or less, and a cutout requirement of 9-9/16" or less. When used together with minimal fill, the box and subwoofer combine to create a critically damped subwoofer with a Qtc of 0.589 and an f3 of 45 Hz.

During the CNC manufacturing process, rabbets and dadoes are cut into the back panel for precise panel alignment. A unique two-piece brace adds superior rigidity without affecting the subwoofer's performance. Both side panels feature 3/4" rabbeted extensions with rabbeted recesses to perfectly install the first piece of the two-part, double thick baffle. Plate amplifier installation is made easy by following the scribed interior guide with a jig saw and by modifying one of the braces.

The end result is a resonance-free, sealed subwoofer cabinet that is purpose-built to extract the best performance from Dayton Audio's 10" Ultimax subwoofer. All that's left to do is finish it to match your décor or paint it to stand out. When your friends ask about it, you get the pleasure of saying, "I built it myself!"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inspect Carefully Before AssemblyI should have been more careful and inspected every part of the kit before assembly. UPS seems to have dropped the kit in such a way as to damage one corner of the kit. The Parts Express packaging job was very good but further inspection of the box it came in showed obvious signs of UPS gorillas. It isn't a deal breaker, and some strong clamps and creative use of them made things O.K., but I had already cut out the back for the plate amp and if the damage was any worse I would have been out of warranty and out of luck. That being said, the kit is very nice and easy to assemble. The machine work makes the kit quick to assemble and VERY strong.

It looks like it would work alright, but what are your thoughts on using this box with a Dayton Audio RSS265HF-8 10" Reference HF? I purchased two for use in a couple of homemade tube enclosures, but am having second thoughts.

Asked by: 16X4ME
The volume of the enclosure will work well. The cutouts will be slightly oversized for the Reference woofer but it will still fit snug in the through hole.

How can I install the plate amp (SPA250) for downfiring position?

Asked by: cardo
I see no way of this working unless you use different braces, the length from box wall to brace is 6.5". Your other option with that amp is to make a box for it.
