from A great sub to supplement small speakers!I own one of these and use it in combination with a set of JBL Control 1x speakers. The combo is rather impressive for its miniscule foot print, or actually, lack of one.Where this sub shines is in the fact that it is design to be corner loaded, AND WALL MOUNTED (using optional bracket, or build your own... I'll caution you, it's shockingly heavy). I bought this guy intending to be used as part of my bedroom surround. It's a very small room (12' x 10') and floor space is at a premium. I have no doubt it will do a ridiculous job in that application. That said, this is not a "subwoofer" or a .1 channel. It's intended to augment 2 channels of sound, generally provided by small bookshelf speakers, by adding a little bottom end to them. It has internal crossovers for two channels that will dampen the bass out of your bookshelf speakers and use their small (typically 8" or less) drivers as midbass. Now, on to the nuts and bolts of things... When I got mine (I purchased it used) I decided to disassemble it and see what its all about before I ever played it.Considering the SB-2 is actually a JBL *PRO* piece of gear, I expected to see the same cast basket driver that I find in all JBL Pro gear... I was disappointed... The actually driver in this thing has a stamped sheet metal basket and appears of "average" quality. That's one of the reasons why I'm giving it 3 stars for value. It's simply not the same caliber of driver that all of my other JBL Pro gear uses....With my disappointment mounting, I put it back together and hooked it up... That is where my disappointment abruptly ended. With it wired to a set of Control 1x speakers and running off of my relatively cruddy Pioneer AVR putting out a rated 110W/channel (probably more like 75w in the real world) this thing was outstanding. I was playing it in a 12'x40' room and it was easily filling that space with good quality sound and even "pounding" a little (I do have a double 18" sub cab in the same room, no... it won't do that).. What I had created was a nice, crisp, full sound for under $400 that hangs up on the wall. I was impressed. For being a slot loaded design I found it to be amazingly tight without the "boominess" that expected from that design. This combined with the Control 1x's made for a very impressive rig that can all be mounted to the wall and occupy 0 floor space. If you're doing a small room, or want a stealth home theater rig that you can tuck behind curtains and bookcases (the case of the SB-2, you could easily put it in a corner behind a couch with no one being the wiser, the sound is not easily localized) that has a good deep sound, you'll be wanting one of these. My 3rd string home theater is a Bose AM-5 and a Bose AM-7.. I went that way because I wanted to tuck it all away and make it nice and neat looking... I made a huge mistake. I should have went with this type of setup from the start. The only real complaint(s) I have are the poor quality driver and the fact that the wall mounting bracket isn't included and costs about 1/3 of the speaker price. In terms of features, if something says it's JBL "Pro", I want to see binding posts on it, not spring terminals... I loathe spring terminals. So there you have it! If you have an application where you want stealth or have no floor space, you definitely need one of these!
