HiVi M8N 8" Aluminum/Magnesium Woofer

The HiVi M8N has been optimized for extended and dynamic bass reproduction in vented systems. The clarity and accuracy provided by the unique one-piece aluminum/magnesium cone is remarkable. This high rigidity diaphragm accurately reproduces transient attacks, contributing to a naturally dynamic and articulate sonic character in the bass and midbass regions. A high temperature Kapton voice coil, air transparent spider, and 1-3/8" voice coil provide good power handling. This woofer can be used to good effect in a medium sized 2-way system or as a woofer in a 3-way system. Recommended crossover upper frequency region for a 2-way system design is 1-2 kHz.

HiVi M8N 8" Aluminum/Magnesium Woofer
HiVi M8N 8" Aluminum/Magnesium Woofer is rated 4.7308 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Bottom End for an 8" Woofer!I am very impressed by these puppies. Mounted them in a 2 cu ft enclosure with a 2" dia port 7" long. Awesome bass. Has a rather large peak at 2200 Hz due to aluminun cone, so it either needs a notch filter there or crossed over low. Mine are crossed over at 1600 Hz with a Dayton Reference series silk dome, which has an Fs of only 541 Hz. Sounds great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SOUNDS AND LOOKSBeen using HIVI drivers for years. Exceptional looks and performance. Used 2 of these for each side of stereo. Gives you 4 ohm load and about 94 DB. used the M5N for mids, and a planar for tweeter. Impressive Bass in my TL cabinets. Fairly smooth response, good SPL. (and they come with speaker gaskets!). Try em...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good woofer, highly recomendedI own a pair of Sony ssf7000 towers and I don't liked how they sounded so after a search on PE web site I found the M8Ns. I replaced all the drivers, the woofers and midbass speakers with 2 M8Ns, the mids with morel dome mids CAM 558 (with lpads to math the M8N spl ) and the tweeters with morel tweeters MDT39.The Sony ssf7000 towers have no decent crossover at all so I used a pair of Dayton 3 way crossover 500/4khz for my project. The result, out of the box the M8Ns outperforms the Sony drivers, the bass is stronger, more detailed and with more low end. My ears never have lied to me!. I'm shure that they will sound even better when they get completly brake in.Excellent woofer, highly recomended, they worth every dollar that you can spend on it.Ah, I told you that they are beautiful?Sorry if I make any grammnar or spell mistake, I'm learning English now.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fine woofer - needs a good burn in.This is a clean articulate bass, not a sloppy bass that some have come to prefer. This woofer is equally happy with classical, jazz, modern rock, classic rock - my wife even put on some hip hop something-or-other today. These drivers had no problem with that at wall shaking volumes. This woofer does take some time to burn in and it won't sound very good until it is burned in.Give it 1-2 weeks at 10hrs/day and then you'll be happy. It will need some impedance correction.Tame the impedance, slap a good coil on here and call the low pass taken care of. No need for complex x-overs.I'll admit when I first hooked these up and dropped them in the cabs, I was having 2nd thoughts. Don't rush it - burn it in - and your patience will be rewarded!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expectedI employed the use of a pair of these drivers for an experimental crosseover I have been working on for some time. They are in a floor standing cabinet with a dayton tweeter in a two way speaker system. First I have to say that I have been enjoying these without a subwoofer and love the bass extension. They are very smooth and have worked extremely well through the midrange without becoming bright or directional. Vocals are spot on and they reproduce horns very well; without being obnoxious or too soft. I cannot express how far they have surpassed my expectation, especially for such an inexpensive woofer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great performance for the moneyI bought these to replace the woofers in my Infinity 2 way towers. The towers were purchased in 1996, even though I've upgraded my main speakers as I was able to afford better ones, I always loved the sound of these Infinity's. Not having the heart to throw them away, I found these and determined that they are a good match with the enclosure and crossover. I purchased them and was really impressed with the size and build quality. The motor structure is much larger then the old Infinity, as well as the overall size.. the diameter is a little bit larger also(about 1/2 a inch). I needed to drill some pilot holes to insure they would be centered in the opening, and after screwing them in place, they sounded awesome. Much better than those Infinity's ever sounded new. The bass extension is at least 10 Hz deeper then before, and the efficiency is greater too. After breaking them in a little, I loved the sound more and more.. even looking at my Klipsch reference towers thinking about an upgrade for them (but that would be silly, they're fine). The only thing I think I would've done any different is to get the ones with the cast basket instead of the ones I got with the stamped steel basket.. but for the money I still think they are a excellent purchase. Every day I'm amazed by how great they sound running full range with no subwoofer at all. They can handle power no problem, I'm running them with a Onkyo stereo receiver at 50 wpc, and the amp runs out of puff way before the speaker does. But it still will rattle stuff all over the house, clean and accurate. Perfect affordable replacement speaker. I'm looking forward to buying more products from Parts Express. My next project is going to be a subwoofer kit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from for the previous poster re bose 301Hi, remember that the Bose 8 inch were designed to be used with the box that they are in. These 8's actually do have better performance than your stock Bose woofers, but the internal vol. of the 301 box is far too small for these woofers to shine. Although they have a fairly flexible Bandwith product( EBP = Fs / Qes= 58) and could be ported or sealed, these would benefit from an enclosure considerably larger than what the 301 has to offer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spectacular Speaker!I just bought 4 of these babies to replace 4 Peerless speakers in a pair of Vintage Amrita Heartland Towers. Those speakers have two back to back 8" woofers configured in an isobaric driver array in each speaker tower. So each speaker radiates bass energy equivalent to a 15" WOOFER (but with a much tighter dispersion and radiation pattern). I used these speakers to replace the top four stock woofers because my son had damaged all four surrounds while transporting them to his birthday party (yikes!).Well I have to report that these are even better than the originals! The bass is even tighter and the midrange is articulation to die for. It works incredibly with the 4 internal 8"ers in the isobaric setup. I have never heard bass this deep and articulate from any speaker. And my system has 3 12" amplified subwoofers to boot, in a home theater audio/video array. After adding the Hi-Vi's into the mix in my Front mains, I noticed an immediate tightening up of the entire bass spectrum! Simply unbelievable sound. I plan to explore using more of these incredible speakers as replacements for my sides and rear speakers. I have the Amrita Ariels for the side. they are bookshelf types and sport an 8" woofer also. I highly recommend this speaker. And give it 10 Stars**********

Rated 3 out of 5 by from the good looking ones catch your eye,but u dont find out until later that they cant cook...lolthey look good but for sound i wasnt very impressed, which could have been biased since i used them for replacement drivers for 1 set of bose 301s and so i was able to compare them to my other set which still sound much better

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice wooferI was hoping for a less bright kind of sound, but the punchy bass performance is decent. Not as good as my stock Henry Kloss woofers but they will do. A radical change in EQ helped these perform in the areas I was looking for.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Outstanding DriverI built a pair of 3-ways with these as bass drivers and they perform beautifully. They have fantastic response down to 25 Hz and combined very well with my mid drivers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OUTSTANDINGI recently purchased a pair of these to replace the woofers in my old Inifiity Reference Four's and it was the best decision I have ever made. The magnets and spiders on these are gigantic and allow for lots of movement. You get the best of both worlds...smooth AND punchy bass. I have never hear an 8" with such a lower frequency response. Don't think twice about picking these up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb sound. Stylish design.I was impressed by sound for such very reasonable priced woofer. Works very well in 3-way. Take specs, put into kbapps calculator. Build enclosure and enjoy. As soon as my wife saw speakers, she said - NO GRILLS! She likes the style and I agree with her. Next time I will buy 4 of them :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A diamond in the roughWell,well,well..who wants a woofer at a bargain price? I've been custom-building speakers for many years and few have matched the price-to performance ratio that the M8a have. They have a very articulate mid-bass/midrange to 1,000 Hs. If revealing detail is your thing, then these are for you. The sensitivity is closer to 89 dB at 1 watt/1 meter in free air; subtract 2 dB mounted in cabinet. In a 40 liter tower design, using a 2 1/16" X 5" port, you will attain an F3 of 32 Hz. I would recommend any quality dome midrange that Parts Express sells and cross over at 750-1,000 Hz. Very good bass articulation and lower midrange. If you are into high SPL's, I would not use more than 100 watts per channel of high-current power, however. If you're into a laid-back sound, these are not for you; they are revealing(to a fault)so damp and attenuate properly.Excellent budget high-end woofer!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really Nice KickI replaced my Bose 301 Series II Old bookshelve woofers that were hanging in my garage and blown. I've had them for 30 years and reconed once. Now that I've replaced them with these HiVi woofers. They increased the performance and clarity and range noticably by ear 4 times. 160 WATTS MAX EACH!!! I feel they are worth the $99 w/shipping so much that Im ordering 2 more for my indoors system. Hoping the internal cabinet electronic"s holds up!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from how to get a good bass headache!Built a pair of 30 hz TL enclosures, used these in an MTM configuration along with a planar tweeter. crossed over around 2500 hz. Every one who listens to them says, "where is your subwoofer located?". Extremely efficient system.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from commen sense to useI replaced the original 8 inch driver with the m8n, and let me tell you the preformance blew me away. I was amazed the this driver sounded better without a subwoofer. the bass, and vocals sound professional. HIVI is the best choice for loudspeaker building. it is very well built

Rated 5 out of 5 by from better than we thought it would be...We have developed HI-END speakers that are sold under brand name "UFO", Universal Fusion Omni-polar Speakers and we are extreemly sattisfied with the performance of the HiVi M8N woofer, same as miderange and tweeter we received from Parts express. We recomend this choice to all, that are looking for something best!www.vlm-augustin.com

HiVi M8N 8" Aluminum/Magnesium Woofer

Parts Express Staff, I Need Your Help!!!!!

Can anyone fron the Parts Express staff get out an inductance meter from stock and record the reading here?
Asked by: VacuumTube Johnny
This woofer has an inductance of 1.383 mH as measured with the WT3.
Answered by: MattP
Date published: 2013-08-04

Inductance?

Does anyone know the voice coil inductance of this woofer? HiVi doesn't include this on their spec sheets.
Asked by: VacuumTube Johnny
Based on woofer's with similar specs that list the Le of the Voice Coil, I'd venture to say it's probably somewhere between 0.8 - 1.1 mH. Are you going to build a Zobel network for it? If so, use the median Le between the two values I listed and you should be good.Hope this helps.

Screw hole size

I have recently purchased the b4n and another hivi tweeter and the 8-32 screw size works perfectly for them, I was wondering if this is the same for the m8n, or will I need larger mounting screws.
Asked by: ZLyzen
The mounting hole size in the woofer's frame is listed as 4.8mm, which is approximately 3/16 of an inch. If you use washers (and you should), you should be fine.Hope this helps.

2 woofers

if i was to build a sealed enclosure using 2 of the m8n woofers what would the right volume be and should i make separate chambers or just one? all the software i've tried keeps giving me different answers. the midrange and tweeted would go into a separate cabinet
Asked by: bigunit12
Tweeter doesn't need a cabinet. Mid needs it's own separate enclosure. The woofers can share a cabinet space - calculate for one woofer and multiply the volume by 2.

good match with planar dipoles?

Would this be a good woofer to combine with a planar dipole? I am thinking for that purpose a sealed box would probably be better than a ported one because the planars are hard to keep up with -- does that sound right? My worry is that in the product description it says that these are specially designed to benefit from a ported enclosure, though.
Asked by: Dapaper
These magnesium woofers can certainly "play nice" with various tweeters, planar, dipole and otherwise. For a sealed alignment, consider the HiVi M8a, linked below for your convenience.

I haven't seen any of these used in a car. Would would they do?

Asked by: DKinney
the cost of four of these and then a 2 ohm stable amp would give some impressive results but sun may age the edges fast. these are not car drivers as such. GET THE TC SOUND 8 OR 10 ON SALE CYBER MONDAY you will not be disappointed when you hook a big amp to a TC

Can this be an outdoor driver?

Is this driver suitable for outdoor applications? For that matter, how do I determine if a driver is suitable for using outdoors? Thanks,Michael
Asked by: MPFT
yes, this would prove to most likely do well in mild elements. it seems as if the cones are anodized. remember that the idea of outdoor speakers is that they tend to be under an overhang, and are therefore small, while this woofer tends to ask for breathing room. if you do use this for an outdoor system, be sure to make them in a mid-size enclosure. also, be sure to weather strip the mouth of the speaker mounting hole. if you can make a proper enclosure and put it in a nice spot, i think they would sound stunning. please leave a review after you do. i would like to see what you came around to. hope this helped!

Enclosure volume?

HiOn the spec sheet HiVi notes 22L vented enclosure for this driver. What would be the closed equivalent? I have calculated 39 L with 0.7 QTC, it is just strange that the sealed is higher
Asked by: aranyosa
According to the software we use here (Bass Box Pro, referenced below for your convenience), a sealed enclosure for this driver would be 19.07 liters for a Qtc of 0.707 and an F3 frequency of approximately 57 Hz. If I run the same driver for a vented enclosure, I get something like 63 liters. I'm not sure if the specification sheet is out of date or in error on our website, as there is no date or specific model number listed on the sheet we have posted.
