HiVi M3N 3" Aluminum/Magnesium Midbass

A shielded magnet structure allows the HiVi M3N 3" full-range speaker to be incorporated easily into audio/video and multimedia applications. The driver may be used in a small closed box as a midrange unit in a three-way system and the good extension (97 Hz) in a vented enclosure allows for use in a 2-way two-driver or MTM configured system. The M3N also features a magnesium/aluminum alloy cone, stamped frame, and hi-temp voice coil and bobbin.

HiVi M3N 3" Aluminum/Magnesium Midbass
HiVi M3N 3" Aluminum/Magnesium Midbass is rated 4.5556 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from High quality speakerI made a couple of TMM's, paired the M3Ns (M3N's in parallel) with the infamous Dayton "silkie" dome tweeter and these things shone! I put them in little 13.5"x"5"x7" sealed boxes and put a 2nd order two-way butters-worth on them (crossed at 8000hz). In winISD my box dimensions showed a little bump at the low end, but it was negligible.Anyways, The M3N's have impressive bass for the size, but I would never use them for bass duty. The real cone extension does not match the excursion, so I am hesitant to push them. There are 3" speakers with better extension. I would also never put them full range due to their low high range. They demand tweeters. Right now, they have full range signal coming to them (which sounds great), but putting them through the 100hz high-pass on my sub makes them sound much cleaner. They get much louder when that low-end is cut off. Blended with my JBL PB8 the whole package sounds clean and smooth - they are devoid of ear-fatigue.I would recommend these to anyone. Please note that the cones aren't yellow, but a pale copper!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic bottom end! These speakers have amazing bottom end for the size. Almost a full range, just needing some highs to make an amazing sound. I've paired these with a 5/8" silk dome tweeter and was blown away! Very warm and natural.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tall & Skinny no-crossI used these to replace some 3-inch "full-range" drivers in the towers pictured. No sparkle up top before. So I wanted a low-cost solution that would sound acceptable - had tons of luck with HiVi / Swan stuff in the past. Wired in parallel with some extremely low-end tweeters. Go ahead, smash on Piezo stuff, fine. For a $90 / PAIR of towers I challenge you to show me something that sounds better. These aren't just an experiment that got saved with "acceptable" - these sound alive! HiVi, as usual, delivered on their promise of fidelity and value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth midrange in 3-way systemUsing as a midrange crossed over at 650/5000. They are not as loud as other speakers, but have a smoother response and can handle the abuse at full volume. Honestly these save me from using the equalizer to highlight the lower and upper frequencies. Will use again in a TMW system for sure. Only drawback is the small terminals, I solder everything and these are fairly fragile.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from All around, niceI made 1.021 cu ft enclosures for these speakers and x-overed relatively high at 3.5k with a second order. They have very nice bass for a speaker this size, audible down to 50hz. I highly recommend these drivers, but they need a large enclosure even sealed if you expect to get any low end from them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice speaker for home theater or midrangeAs the other reviewers mentioned, it has nice bass performance for its size. I used these in a small pair of MTM's with an ND20FA-6, and am very happy with the sound quality. I've used the B3N / B3S's in the past, and while they're a slightly better value (given that they also give good performance but they cost about half as much), the M3N seems like a nicer overall driver. I used these in a pair of skinny towers to sit next to my flat screen for lower-volume duty when I need to avoid waking up the neighbors. Each was about 33" x 5" w x 7.5" d. The MTM's took up the top 11", and the bottom chamber went to a side-firing TB-876SD 5" 'subwoofer'. (The subs are run in parallel from an SA-70 amplifier to fill the low end). Very happy with the results.

HiVi M3N 3" Aluminum/Magnesium Midbass

The terminals are red and white, does the red one match the positive output from my receiver?

Asked by: Antipodean
The left side (red side) as pictured is the positive terminal.

How would this do as a full range for rear speakers in 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound?

Asked by: oTTo the CzAR
For most people it will be perfectly suitable for this. Surround sound speakers don't need to reproduce anything below 80-100 Hz and are heard less than 10% of the time. Ultimately all you can do is try it and see for yourself.
