Product Details

HiVi D6G 6" Kevlar/Paper Woofer

The HiVi D6G speaker represents a design in which the voice coil is positioned over a large thermally stabilized neodymium magnet and undercut pole piece. A specially shaped, CNC machined steel cup completes the magnetic structure from the outside, creating a shielded magnet system with symmetrical flux density distribution along the gap. The long-throw voice coil experiences a symmetric driving force that substantially decreases inductance and back electromotive force modulations. The whole magnet structure is optimized using the Finite Element Analysis technique, and the result is a radical improvement of driver linearity. The cone is fabricated from a newly developed matrix of Kevlar and paper fibers. It has a shallow, high integrity structure, which is extremely rigid and dynamically stable. A large voice coil diameter allows for much more uniform cone movement, resulting in clear and accurate reproduction. The vented motor design effectively transfers heat to the die-cast frame, and along with a high temperature Kapton former voice coil, provides a dramatic increase in power handling.

HiVi D6G 6" Kevlar/Paper Woofer
HiVi D6G 6" Kevlar/Paper Woofer is rated 4.6667 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from HiVi D6G vs. Morel ECW638I have owned a set of 4 D6Gs since I was in high school. They were the first "premium" drivers I ever purchased, and still to this day I have yet to find only a single driver which outperforms (the Morel ECW638 coppersleeve) it. With that said, the choice between the two is not obvious. The Morel costs 4x as much (at least it did, for some reason this driver is now 160+ when it used to be ~60), and for that sort of money, you do not get 4x the performance. Above 500Hz, the Morel is more detailed, period. It's also much easier to match to tweeters since it does not break up right around 2.5kHz like the D6G does. However, if you mate the D6G to a tweeter which can drop relatively low, such as HiVi's own SD1a, and if you employ a L-R filter on both, you can get away with it (I chose 4th order on my tweeter, 2nd order on the D6Gs with a Zobel). With the Morel, you've got far more flexibility when choosing tweeters, but honestly for the money, you would expect this. The D6G is more at home being in a 3-way, therefore, but if designed properly, you can get away with it being a 2-way's woofer. Now, here's the critical bit: the D6G is unmatched below 500Hz. All of the detail which the Morel can replicate is wonderful, but it lacks the low end to make detailed low frequencies (think double bass, tympani or other kettle drums, percussion, etc.). The D6G shines in this area. The term I'll use for lack of a better one is visceral impact. When a kick drum comes in, you hear a kick drum instead of simply a bass note keeping the beat. This is a quality that needs to be heard to be explained, and I've yet to hear it in any other driver. To sum up: while not as flexible as the Morel, it is cheaper, uglier, better when used solely as a woofer, and when given ample air, blows the Morel out of the water. In other words, towers = D6G, bookshelf = Morel. These guys need air to work with, so give them what they want.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This little woofer rocks!I'm using a pair of these with a Morel DMT-30s in a 29 liter cabinet tuned to about 40hz. Still experimenting with crossovers, but everybody that has heard them seems to like the 2nd order best.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Strangei wonder why the 5"and 6" have rubber surrounds, but the 8"has treated foam.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from fine bass and upper midrangeUsed this driver in a 14 liter enclosure with a 1"x2.5" vent for an Fb of 40.5 Hz.Crossed over at 1,800 a Morel MDT-30S tweeter with mirrored fourth-order Butterworth filter. In this topology, the speakers nearly disappeared!A slight drop in lower midrange presence, but no transducer is perfect.Very versatile and will also work in a .75 cu. ft. cabinet with a 2"x 7" port with F3 of 35 Hz,but with far less power handling.A surprising find!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OutstandingHave two per vented enclosure as bass driver, crossed out at 500hz. Articulate, fast, powerful, deep and musical. If this driver were made in Europe it would cost twice the price. Kevlar never sounded so good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good performance! The amount and quality of bass for a 6inch unit in aoptimized enclosure is unbelevable...

The specs from the manufacturer differ from the specs posted in the item's page. Which one is correct?

Asked by: cchean
The manufacturer spec sheet we have on our site is outdated, the specs match what is currently on Swans webpage for this driver. I will have the spec sheet fixed.

Does this speaker comes with mounting screws? If not, what size or diameter of screw should I get? Thanks!

Asked by: roycee
Unfortunately this does not come with screws. I would recommend #6 x 3/4" screws for this driver.
