GRS 5SBM-8 5" Sealed Back Midrange

The GRS 5SBM-8 5" sealed back midrange speaker is a perfect replacement for many popular 3-way and 4-way loudspeaker systems produced during the last couple of decades. The driver's enclosed chassis eliminates the need to provide a separate sub-enclosure; the 5SBM-8 is a drop-in alternative driver for many applications, as well as providing excellent performance in new projects, too.

GRS 5SBM-8 5" Sealed Back Midrange
GRS 5SBM-8 5" Sealed Back Midrange is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Strongly reccomended.Well builted midrange, with a useful metal grille, it sounds natural and with good efficiency, highest price-performances ratio. So far so good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great replacements!Bought 6 of these to replace 2 in some 19 year old Cerwin Vega! RE25's and 4 in some 30+ old Fisher DC15's. These may be cheap but make a big difference over what was stock speaker in both cabinets. I can actually now hear the mids and can turn up the bass without washing out the mids. My neighbors love them.....LOL.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Better then stock, but not much moreI own these mids and a pair of Goldwood GM-85/8 Heavy Duty 5-1/4" Sealed Back Midrange. The Goldwood's are much better and sound smoother.PROS: Low cost, grill, 89db SPL, decent replacement for most midsCONS: Easily blown, at louder volumes this mid sounds "distressed" and not happy playing loudCONCLUSION: These lasted about 5 months before dying. I really think they are cheap mids dressed up to look tough (with the grill). Go with the Goldwood GM-85/8 Heavy Duty 5-1/4" mids (4 or 8 ohm available). I have these in my other project and they still sound amazing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice MidrangeCan't go wrong for the price. Installed in vintage 3 way speaker cabinets.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Unity Horn Style SpeakerI bought 4 of these to try out in a Unity Horn design (a type of speaker developed and patented by Tom Danley) To the guy who asked if the grills are removable, they are, but they are glued on. I tore one surround because the glue had flowed onto it. I am using it with a Dayton compression driver for highs and 8 Pyle PDMW5 for lows. The mids operate in the horn from 350-1.6khz at -3 db. The sound is awesome and loud. It's capable of punching in the chest from 100hz on up to 800hz. They can do continuous output at 125db at 1 meter. I'm using them as small PA speakers for weddings and DJing, but the sound quality is good enough to keep up with my home setup. For the price I'm very satisfied.

Sealed Back Replacement

Can you replace this sealed back midrange speaker in a vented cabinet with a non sealed unit such as a Dayton with similar specks?
Asked by: TonyD
If you replace a sealed back midrange with an open back speaker you will still have to create a chamber behind the driver to prevent the woofer from distorting the cone. You can use something as simple as a dixie cup glued behind the driver for this.

What size are the terminals?

I need to know whether they are 3/16, 1/4, etc so I can buy the right connectors.
Asked by: Profeesor X
The terminals on our current stock are 0.110" (negative) and 0.205" (positive). I've linked the appropriate connectors below for your convenience.

What are the Thiele Small parameters? Does it have a accordion surround or a half roll?

Asked by: JMorken
I would tend to call those irrelevant due to the sealed nature of the basket. You do, however, need the frequency response graph and the voice coil inductance. (Judging from the Re, it is probably fairly small.) At the price offered, it is not unreasonable to simply buy one to test with woofer tester.

Is the grill removeable? Thanks.

Asked by: Clint
No, the grill is not designed to be removed. That is not to say that it absolutely could not be removed, it is simply designed to be left in place.
