Product Details

Goldwood GW-1248 12" Butyl Surround Woofer 8 Ohm

Butyl rubber surrounds are superior to foam in two important ways. First, the butyl rubber resists moisture and will not dry rot, providing years of service. Second, the rubber surround, due to its superior damping characteristics will greatly reduce cone break up and ensure low distortion. These woofers are ideal for replacing and upgrading old, worn out drivers. They all feature a polypropylene cone, vented pole piece, foam gasket, soft poly dust cap, and stamped steel frame.

Goldwood GW-1248 12" Butyl Surround Woofer 8 Ohm is rated 4.3824 out of 5 by 34.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just what I expectedThis driver performs just as I expected. I previously used a cone with a cloth surround but it was distorting at high volumes due to the rigidity of the surround. This driver reproduces sounds that I had not previously heard when listening to "In the air tonight" by Genesis. Overall a really good speaker.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Replacement Woofers for 25yr old Philips Textile Cones with Foam surroundsInstalled these into a pair of speakers that I built in 1988 and they fit perfectly and sound great. The modern materials should help get a little more life than the original Philips drivers did. For the price these are really good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not to shabbyI used this speaker to replace a blown driver in an Audio Sourcesub woofer. It was a direct drop in. I didn't do anycalculations to determine which driver would be bestsuited for this particular enclosure , but was pleasantlysurprised. I ran a frequency sweep, and noted that in the20-30hz region there was not much output, but afterthat, it does the job quite nicely. As always, Parts Expressprovides quality, affordable solutions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Sealed Box WooferI replaced the Large Advent -style woofers in my Canadian Avants with these in their 2 cuft enclosures. I paralleled a 24 ohm resistor to get the same measured 5.4 ohm Re as the originals. They absolutely thunder, Qtc=1 (though surprisingly clean), F3-40/F6-33/F10-27. Not recommended for a vented enclosure, the peak regardless of port and enclosure size is horrific, unless that's what you want.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very surprisedI brought Goldwood GW-1248 12" Butyl Surround Woofer 8 Ohm speaker for my sound dynamics floor speaker. The original speaker has a larger magnet, so to my surprise I was blown away when I listen to the deep bass, and how it handle the mid range . I cranked these baby's too see if they could handle the output from my stereo, no problem. I will use them again if I blow one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truly a great value!I've been looking for 12" woofers for sometime now,& RatShack doesn't seem to carry much of anything in those matters these days.I got the Parts express flyer & saw these & had to get them before they were sold out. I acquired a pair of older Curtis Mathes floor speakers & blew the original woofers in no time. These dropped right in with no mods needed, the sound is way better then the originals with excellent bass! I rated the features 4 cause the wire terminals were a lil chintzy. I would definitely recommend these speakers to all! The shipping is out of this world got here a week sooner than I was expecting considering I didn't pay a dime cause my order was over $98.00!

Does this have to be a replacement?

I just want to build my own AS speaker system, would this be right for the job?
Asked by: tunaman
Yes these can be used for both OE replacements or for woofers in a custom design. These will work quite well in an acoustic suspension enclosure.

1.8 cubic feet??

i have some old kenwood JL-1001AV speaker cabinets and i am converting the internal airspace to 1.82 cubic feet (sealed) and i want to put this sub in it and i was wondering how it would sound whether it would be good or be all distorted??
Asked by: lytro96
This woofer works best in a sealed cabinet and will do pretty well in that airspace as long as the cabinet is heavily stuffed. I would recommend starting with 2-3 lbs of fill and you can always add or remove to taste.

On the Goldwood GW-1248 12" I only see two connections?

I want replace an old Optimus 12" 8 ohm 100 watt speaker and it has 4 connections?
Asked by: Ron Gregory
This Goldwood is what is called a Single Voice Coil driver which means it only has one positive and one negative connection. You need a Dual Voice Coil (DVC) woofer that has two of each. I would recommend the Dayton below.

Recommended enclosures. I don't see any recommended enclosures in the PDF.Would like to have more information on compatible enclosures.

Asked by: Marty62253
I don't think there are any recommendations on this driver. From experience, I can tell you that 1.5 cu ft sealed is a very good performing box overall. 2 cubic feet sealed will give the driver more room to make very low frequencies, but it does limit power handling. You can also do a 2 cu ft ported box (1 4" port 5" long) and get very very good sound from the driver, but be careful with this configuration. A high pass filter around 30-45 hz is suggested.I have a 4th order bandpass design for this that is extremely easy to build and far surpasses performance of sealed or ported and I have used it literally dozens of times with this specific driver, Not sure of airspace at the moment, but if you want to email me at musgofasa(at), I can send you a complete drawing of the enclosure including board cuts etc.
