Galaxy Audio Cricket Polarity Test Set

Galaxy Audio's battery powered Cricket Polarity/Continuity Test Set makes it easy to determine whether every component in an audio system from patch bay to console to speakers is in or out of polarity. The Cricket tests balanced and unbalanced cables of up to 2,000 feet in length. It will drive a "snake" (even one with transformers), and indicate which of a microphone's XLR connector pins is hot. The Cricket can also plug directly into a speaker cabinet and drive the components. A glance at the Cricket's red and green LEDs can save hours of troubleshooting. No wonder it's an indispensable tool for sound system owners, operators, installers and sound rental companies.

In even the simplest sound systems there are all sorts of ways for polarity to become reversed; the more complex the system, the greater the potential for problems. The Cricket can test the polarity of wireless microphones, mixers, effects devices, amps, cables, and speakers. Polarity, should it become reversed, can play havoc with a sound system. If two sources are emitting the same electrical or acoustic tone (frequency), and one of those sources is in a state of inverted polarity, those tones, when combined at a given point, will cancel each other. While cancellation does not always indicate a complete loss of all sound, it does result in diminished sound quality. Unlike phase, polarity (at all distances and times) is either in or out. It's absolute.

Cricket Send Pulse Generator • Pulse Waveform Polarity: positive-going balanced line output pulse, switch selectable for hi or low level balanced signal with positive pressure produced at the tip of 1/4" jack and pin #2 of XLR jack. • Speaker Output Pulse: Accepts 2 ohm (or greater) load with positive pressure produced at the tip of a 1/4" speaker jack and positive terminal of an internal speaker. • Dimensions: 3.375" W x 1.812" H x 6.25" L • Weight (with battery): 1.10 lbs. • Battery: 9 volt, alkaline only (battery included)

Galaxy Audio Cricket Polarity Test Set
Galaxy Audio Cricket Polarity Test Set is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Polarity (phase) tester, nice and simple.Value: You can't really find it any cheaper and if you know what it does and it does what you want, well there's value in it.Performance: It does what it does, simply and nicely.Features: It's features are that it checks polarity, there are other ways to check polarity and this is just one more of them. However, this might be one of the most convenient ways, all depending on many things, of course. Sometimes, arguably, it's also a phase tester, which is partly why I bought it. Sometimes, arguably, phase and polarity are the same, but if you have a polarity problem, all other things being equal, you have a phase problem and that's probably a bad thing. Not to forget, it will test some cables directly. But there are other cheaper (maybe) more straight forward and better cable checkers. Look around. What this does, essentially, is it sends a positive pulse waveform (signal) down a line and picks it up on the other end and if the polarity is reversed along the way it tells you. All depending on your set up, this might be the easiest way to check. It does a very limited thing, but it does it well. I got it more for phase reasons than polarity, but I look at polarity as the beginning of the phase question, once again, all depending on what you're testing.I hesitated to write a review on this because phase can get very complex, but polarity is very simple. Polarity is only positive or negative, let's say. But if the right side of your system is out of polarity with the left side of your system, you have a phase problem (unless something else is wired backwards along the way) and that's bad. If your subwoofer is out of phase with the rest of your system, then it's sucking (canceling some of) the lows out of your system, etc.If you have a lot to test, or a long distance installation, you want one of these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from As Advertised....and more.Works very well. Much Better than expected. I intended to get a Gold Line but for 1/3 the price I took a chance. The unit seems to have a little trouble locking on to extremely HF drivers but other than that, no problems.I was worried that the source box would HAVE to be used for proper polarity determination. I used my computer with Audacity to create a pulse source CD and it works wonderfully with the receiver. This unit has already pointed out one out of phase speaker in my 6 active system. I cannot wait for good weather to use it on my main PA system to see if that system is "as marked".

what is the bandwidth of the positive out going waveform

have a muti amp multi actve crossover system... would like to check the source to speaker polarity as many amps and active crossovers invert the outputs

This is a very specific question that would probably be better directed at Galaxy themselves. You can contact them at
