Fountek FW168 6-1/2" Aluminum Midwoofer Speaker

Fountek midbass drivers offer exceptional value with premium features like aluminum cones and phase plugs, robust cast frames, and optimized low-distortion motors.  They are the perfect choice for use in high-end loudspeaker systems, paired with premium-quality tweeters like Fountek’s own ribbon units.

The FW168 6-1/2” model is similar to the smaller 5-1/4” FW146 model in design and cosmetics, but provides deeper bass extension for use in larger monitor and floor-standing speakers. It features the same cast frame and satin-anodized aluminum cone as the other Fountek midwoofer drivers, for an aesthetically seamless match.

Fountek FW168 6-1/2" Aluminum Midwoofer Speaker
Fountek FW168 6-1/2" Aluminum Midwoofer Speaker is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality 6.5" Driver!!I read over the specs and liked what I saw but waited til I came across the right project/cabinet for these jewels. I do a lot of rebuilding of older speaker boxes with drivers that either need re-edging or total driver replacement and these turned out to perform just as I imagined from a set of Sherwood SP5200s boxes that I came across. I read Brewski's comments in the tech forum where these were used in a similar fashion but my solution for a crossover turned out to be much simpler after a call to Eric in PE tech support. He advocated "simpler is better" and gave me a cap and coil for a 6db solution but after looking once more at the freq response range of 4000Hz top end I decided to simply try a 6.8uF cap on the original Sherwood tweeter and run these 168s wide open on their own. Pulling just under 4 ohms when paired in each cabinet they put out a strong 93db and in the Sherwood vented (65 x 120 mm) cabinet ( 22 x 32 x 92cm) they put out all the bass I need whether playing Clapton or Glenn Miller or whatever. Factory packing is better than most with a mylar cover across the face, poly bag over the entire driver and a strong reinforced cardboard box. Cast aluminum frame is nice but may be just slightly bigger than most simple stamped sheet metal frame models at 178mm. These did not quite fit into the original router bevels of the Sherwoods but close enough with just a slight overhang rather than completely dropping into the faceplate bevel. Center bullet shaped dustcover does not move but acts as a centering feature for the cone movement. I expect this build to outlast me. Might replace the tweeter if I come across a real bargain (Eric rec the Tymphany BC25TG15-04 which I may still use) but for now the old one from Sherwood is doing just fine with only an 8uF cap that I settled on after looking over the capacitor charts on PE (JSX superior metalized polypropylene line from jbcapacitors). Highly rec this driver if you are willing to spend a bit more than Goldwood or GRS prices. The quality level is certainly well above those and in my opinion well worth the $ diff! No subwoofer needed with this package!

Fountek FW168 6-1/2" Aluminum Midwoofer Speaker

I have 2 BIC DV 64 towers with 2 - 6 1/2 drivers and 2 - 6 1/2 passive radiators, could I replace 1 of the radiators with 1 Fountek FW168 on each ?

Asked by: BIG Lou
I would not recommend this. Not only will the crossover have to be changed, but it is not a good idea to have two different woofers in the same airspace. Also, dropping to only one passive will really hurt the response of the speaker and overdrive the passive easily.

What size port would produce the best response if I use the Dayton Audio TW-0.25CH 0.25 cu. ft. 2-Way Speaker Cabinet Pair Cherry?

Asked by: DoItYourself2
In order to get a decent tuning frequency in that enclosure, the port will have to be 2" in diameter and almost 17" long. This woofer will work best in the 0.5 cubic foot cabinets, using a port that is only 2" in diameter and 8" long for the same tuning frequency.
