Fountek FR89EX 3" Neodymium Full Range Speaker Driver

Fountek has applied much of what it has learned from designing industry-leading ribbon transducers in creating its line of full-range drivers. These high-performing cone drivers feature thin-foil aluminum diaphragms that shed resonance rapidly, for exceptional detail and smooth frequency response.

The 3" FR89EX model features a high-strength neodymium motor structure with underhung geometry, for low distortion, extended excursion, and excellent transient response. It’s a great choice for compact projects that demand the very best performance from a small full-range driver.

Fountek FR89EX 3" Neodymium Full Range Speaker Driver
Fountek FR89EX 3" Neodymium Full Range Speaker Driver is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb full range driver in the right hands (and pIf you try to use this driver full range unassisted, you’ll find that it does an adequate, respectable job. With a few extra finishing touches, it’s superb.I show two curves here. Both are in a 1 liter (Parts Express 0.04 ft^3 knockdown) box with an unmodified Peerless 3.5” Passive Radiator. Mic is nearfield. The first curve is the response with no EQ. As you see it has excellent response from 300 Hz to 20 KHz and with little or no EQ or clever crossover work. Not quite as good as a quality dome tweeter but close. Those who dislike crossovers and crave the coherence of a full range sound will not be disappointed. The dispersion is pretty good. The second curve is final response with a MiniDSP digital EQ. This has a strong boost at 55 Hz with a brick wall filter below, plus tweaks in several spots to tune out some resonances. This combination delivers 9 octaves of music with authority. Doesn’t play super loud, but the excursion on these puppies is remarkable for a driver this size and they will fill a small to medium sized room with music. Paired with a 30-50 watt amp they sound superb. They also sound great with the Tripath Class T amps. They’re especially good with recordings of smaller groups i.e. jazz, solo voices and chamber music. Won’t blow your socks off with rock & roll but they hold their own.Bass response is surprisingly good in a Passive Radiator alignment down to 50 Hz. At low volumes they’ll compete with a pair of Maggies on a good day. Crossed over to a sub, they can be the cornerstone of a superb 2-way wide range system with outstanding coherency. Good power handling, long excursion and superb build quality. These aluminum cones deliver very detailed sound that definitely competes with good dome tweeters.Applied with some patience and perhaps a touch of EQ you will not be disappointed.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mid-range shoutI Like everything about this speaker except the 6 db peak around 2500 Hz and its not baffle diffraction anomalies that I'm dealing with. I would really like an inexpensive way to utilize this rather expensive driver. distortion is low and bass doubling is nil but I cannot abide the piercing mid-range. I have used more than a dozen FE85s with no ear fatigue. A pair wired MTM with your AMT mini tweeters crossed at 5K is hard to beat with only a minimal rise at 3k unnoticeable and unfatiguing for long term listening even though they exhibit doubling below 70 Hz. The X max and power handling are superb. Just need to tame the peak. I have designed a relatively inexpensive filter but I am waiting for some suggestions before I buy the parts. My recommendation is possibly yes in the future but not now.

Fountek FR89EX 3" Neodymium Full Range Speaker Driver

If I have an existing cabinet of 1.6L, what should the port length be? I'm getting strange values from speakerbuilder.

Asked by: JohnP
The best option would be a 1" diameter, 5.5" long port tube for a tuning frequency of 80 Hz, although this may be tough to fit in the box. We sell a 1" diameter, 4" long port that is press fit which will raise the tuning frequency up to about 90 Hz but this will give you a bit more perceived bass output.

cabinet and port

I want to make a box of 2.25 liters. What are the dimensions of the port will be optimized for the frequency of 65-70 Hz?
Asked by: Grey
In that volume you will need a port that is 1" in diameter and 5.5" long. This will tune the enclosure to 69 Hz.
