Fountek FR58EX 2" Neodymium Full Range Speaker Driver

Fountek has applied much of what it has learned from designing industry-leading ribbon transducers in creating its line of full-range drivers. These high-performing cone drivers feature thin-foil aluminum diaphragms that shed resonance rapidly, for exceptional detail and smooth frequency response.

The 2" FR58EX model is the smallest, and features a high-strength neodymium motor structure for low distortion, extended excursion, and excellent transient response. It’s a great choice for desktop multimedia speakers, micro-satellite speakers, or line arrays.

Fountek FR58EX 2" Neodymium Full Range Speaker Driver
Fountek FR58EX 2" Neodymium Full Range Speaker Driver is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb little driverI am familiar with the Fountek brand, and after reading reviews and studying the spec sheet, I decided to grab these for some mini-bookshelves. I am extremely happy with this purchase. The Qts of the drivers measured above the manufacturer's stated number, even after an aggressive break-in, the difference was significant enough that I had to slightly alter my port tuning, but nothing big, and I expect it to continue to fall slightly as they get more hours on them. But on to the sound! The midrange and upper-midrange are crystal clear, and the soundstage is actually surprising! It's both wider and deeper than you'd expect, with excellent spatial placement. These are extremely pleasing to listen to, very engaging. They are not harsh at all, and very flat down in to the bass region. Bass is impressive when vented, considering the piston diameter is only about 1.85 inchces, I'm reaching easily into the 70s in my current configuration. These are true hi-fi drivers.I'm using the parts-express .04cuft mini-bookshelf knockdown boxes and a 3/4" pvc pipe for a port (actual inside diameter 0.80") with a port length of 2.9" for a tuning frequency of ~98hz. Baffle step correction of approximately 2.8dB using a 2.5 ohm resistor and a .40mH inductor sounds great. If you decide to use the p.e. boxes, I recommend cutting a piece of MDF to use as a brace front to back in the box, as it will make the enclosure slightly smaller, which is better for this driver. It likes around .036cuft for really optimally flat bass. Not a huge deal, but if you're a perfectionist like I am, it makes a slight difference. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Most outstanding 2" driver in the world.I have been experimenting with the Fountek FR58EX for about 6 months now and am more impressed with this little driver than I am with my top end floor standing system I designed and built 8 years ago using famous danish drivers. I'm using 1 driver per channel without the aid of a sub-woofer. Imaging and sound-stage are crystalline using the Dayton T-amp. The most discerning audiophile would have a big grin on his face listening to this 9" tall 3" wide 6 1/2" deep transmission line enclosure I've developed over the last 6 months. With the 12" Dayton sub it's just downright scary. I have also developed a line array using four FR58s in a series-parallel configuration with a terminating impedance of 8 ohms, a pair of these reaching well over over 100 db before showing noticeable distortion. My room measurements for just 2 drivers go below 80 hz with an F3 of 77 hz, unheard of for 2 inch drivers. These are perfect for desktop stereos or home theater. My wife is thrilled not to have 2 100 lb. Leviathans in our living area.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic midrangeI've been trying to piece together a good audio system for my E46 BMW wagon for a while. All the components are difficult to replace - the mountings are unusual and the factory amplifier has a built-in crossover. Before these, I tried a 2.5" speaker from another company that was very difficult to trim down to the proper size and had a shrill lower-trebel range (not obvious from response curve on datasheet). While I needed to use a factory speaker as a guide to trim the square frame of this driver, it was easy enough to do with a tin-snips. Once the corners were sufficiently rounded off, they snapped right into the grill cups for the factory speakers, and they even look nice with the silver cone peaking through the black grille. The sound is fantastic! Clear, no shrillness, and a perfect volume level. My only complaint is the soldering tabs. The magnet is very strong and it's difficult to solder to the tabs without the iron sticking to the magnet. If it had faston connectors, there would have been no issue.

Fountek FR58EX 2" Neodymium Full Range Speaker Driver

what is the lowest possible tuning frequency for this?

Asked by: speakerfreack
You can tune as low as you want, but the lowest practical tuning frequency would be around 100 Hz.

Considering a desktop 2 way. Side firing w3-18765 in 91 cu in (4.5 cube) with 2 peerless 3.5 radiators and a front firing FR58ex sealed. Crossing at 250hz. What kind of volume do I need for the sealed FR58? 17.28 cu in or add for driver displacement?

Asked by: Lefty78
Crossing the FR58EX at 250 Hz will negate the need for specific volumes since it is crossed so high. There is no need to compensate for the displacement of the driver at that frequency.

I'm developing a 2 way desktop speaker using this driver...   I'm locked into a 3/4" port diameter (don't ask).  Can someone give a recommendation of enclosure size, port length, and lowest ideal tuning frequency?

Asked by: Mxseven
I'm getting a box volume of roughly 0.026 cubic feet, which is 6"H x 3"W x 5-1/2"D externally using 1/2" material. A 3/4" diameter port would need to be 4-1/2" long for a tuning frequency of 99 Hz which will give you a useable response down to about ~75 Hz.

Would these pair up well with the Tang Band W8-740P 8" Subwoofer?

Asked by: neo32ny
Yes these will work well with that subwoofer. I would recommend a high pass filter around 100 Hz to prevent over excursion problems with the full range drivers.

would this speaker require a tweeter?

Asked by: zachhf
this is too subjective to answer. For most people it would probably not require a tweeter to sound clean in the top octave, although if your older or have slight hearing loss you might want to help the top octave. If they are to be used nearfield and on axis (+/- 5 degrees) I'm sure they will be fine.
