Fountek FR58EX 2" Neodymium Full Range Speaker Driver

Fountek has applied much of what it has learned from designing industry-leading ribbon transducers in creating its line of full-range drivers. These high-performing cone drivers feature thin-foil aluminum diaphragms that shed resonance rapidly, for exceptional detail and smooth frequency response.

The 2" FR58EX model is the smallest, and features a high-strength neodymium motor structure for low distortion, extended excursion, and excellent transient response. It’s a great choice for desktop multimedia speakers, micro-satellite speakers, or line arrays.

Fountek FR58EX 2" Neodymium Full Range Speaker Driver
Fountek FR58EX 2" Neodymium Full Range Speaker Driver is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Neo magnets are not inherently self shieldingIt was asked if the driver was magnetically shielded and the answer given stated that because it had a Neo magnet it would be shielded. This is just wrong. A "self shielded" Neo magnet structure requires the magnet to be within the voice coil ID in a typical "Neo Cup" structure. The pictured Fountek driver is using a neo magnet in the architecture referred to as "T-post and top plate" which is the same as a generic ceramic magnet speaker. This leaves the outer diameter of the magnet exposed and there will be a large stray magnetic field around this driver.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent midrangeI use it as a driver for my 2" midrange horn from 400 Hz to 5kHz, divided with 4th order filter. The midrange has been carefully mounted, and in the horn it behaves like a big midrange. It gives a full bodied sound all the way down to 400 Hz. It gives a very detailed sound with excellent transient behavior. The horn gives me the sensitivity I needed to meet the bass driver which has a sensitivity of 93dB. I even had to dampen the Fountek with 6dB.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not nice!Bought 2 pairs to test. At first they sounded promising with new, recent recordings. But any music recorded in the 60's, 70's sounds terrible. Cone break up is prevalent here and there is simply not enough resolution. High frequencies are missing for sure.Another Fountek disaster. Have 10 pairs of different iterations of their full range drivers - any takers? Zaph are you kidding with Fountek…? So far the worst full rangers by far! Tried with tubes - Leben, tried with SS, tried with Ice - no way you can make these sound decent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning in FAST applicationThis is my second review of this little gem. I resurrected some 1.0cu ft enclosures from the basement and installed a couple of 10" Dayton subwoofers that have been sitting idle. Crossed at 300hz, the tweeters in separate small enclosures sitting on top of the big boxes, with a little felt treatment, they remind me of my Apogee Centaurs, but without the limited sweet spot and much better bass. For less than $300, amazing performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super performanceI used this as the tweeter in a home brewed MTM with Peerless nomex woofers. Other drivers I tried are Vifaxt25 and Tang Band W3-1364sa.Crossed at 500hz with a minidsp, the Fountek wins.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clarity and tone wowGreat little drivers. What i like about them is there clarity and tone.Tone is important to me and i usually listen to full range paper drivers but after a while i want more top end.Glad i bought 2 pairs so i can try different ways of using them. What a bargain.

Fountek FR58EX 2" Neodymium Full Range Speaker Driver

Hi  I am making some bass reflex speaker based on your recommendation. They appear to be rear mounted drivers, is this correct? I plan to use 18mm ply should this be rounded/ chamfered  or is it too thick? Thanks Simon

Asked by: Simon 71
These are designed to be rear mounted. I would recommend rounding or chamfering plywood that thick.

I've made a design for a compact portable speaker, and I am planning to mount these drivers into a speaker enclosure that measures roughly 1,2 liters or 0.042 ft.³. What would be the most reasonable ported option?

Asked by: maarten86
If you are mounting two drivers in that enclosure, a single 1" diameter port that is 4" long would tune the enclosure to about 100 Hz.

I bought a pair of these and am ordering Birch Ply to build enclosures. I want them to be as small as possible, but with as decent low-end response as possible. What internal dimensions should I use, and should be ported/vented?

Asked by: clongbo
If you are looking for as small as possible you will want to go sealed. This will have limited low end however, so you will have to choose which is more important to you regarding size or extension. I would recommend sealed dimensions of 4"H x 2.5"W x 1.75"D. If you chose to vent them, I would recommend 5"H x 2"W x 4-1/2"D internally. A 1/2" diameter port would need to be 3" long for a tuning frequency of 99 Hz which will give you a useable response down to about ~75 Hz.

is this magnetically shielded? Since many have pointed in the reviews that the magnet is very strong. Thanks.

Asked by: arjunm009
This uses a neodymium magnet so it is self shielding. It is very strong, but all of the magnetic field is in the voice coil gap. Neo magnets have a very low stray field that will not effect CRT monitors like a ferrite magnet would.

is this water resistant

Asked by: arjunm009
Yes, this is made from materials that will not be affected by getting wet.

weather resistant? fr an enclosure dimension of 7(W)x4(H)x3(D) external sealed, hw well 'll it perform? if I hv to improve on dat, 'll a vented up d results? wat 'll b its port dimensions den? also, can dis PR-Peerless 830878 assist & reduce box size?

Asked by: arjunm009
Those dimensions will work well for this driver sealed, but it will not play much below about 200 Hz. Unfortunately it will not benefit from a passive radiator. This driver is made from materials that are weather resistant.
