Product Details

FaitalPRO 5FE120 5" Professional Midbass Midrange Woofer 8 Ohm

FaitalPRO's 5FE120 5" professional midbass woofer driver has an extremely flat response from 65 to 6,000 Hz for use in applications where high fidelity is required, such as studio monitors and reference speakers. Great off-axis response up to 3,000 Hz allows it to be combined with many high frequency drivers and tweeters for a great sounding two-way speaker.

A treated paper cone with a half-roll  NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) surround offers outstanding durability, while the truncated, stamped-steel frame allows for very tight speaker-to-speaker placement which is ideal for multi-way speakers and line arrays. To combat distortion, an aluminum demodulation ring is placed atop the pole piece to reduce stored energy and inductance. Made in Italy.

FaitalPRO 5FE120 5" Professional Midbass Midrange Woofer 8 Ohm
FaitalPRO 5FE120 5" Professional Midbass Midrange Woofer 8 Ohm is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Value- Performance way above price.I've had a love-hate relationship with a pair of Radio Shack Optimus-Pro LX5's for over 20 years (sold under Genexxa brand in Canada). When foam-rot sealed the doom of the original 12120 woofers, I started looking for replacements.Process of elimination led me to the FaitalPro 5FE120. The frequency curves looked very smooth for a driver at this price point (or well above).A few WinISD runs showed a Qtc of .707, f3 of 100Hz with ports sealed in this 4l box. Or with ports open, f3 of 70Hz, with less than a 1dB hump. Perfect- the sealed config should integrate nicely with my Paradigm sub.So, I ordered a pair of the 5FE120s, along with a selection of Jantzen inductors, Dayton resistors, and Dayton and Solen capacitors to upgrade the crossover networks, following the work done by worthy colleagues on these speakers years ago.The parts arrived, and first thing, I just mounted the 5FE120's in the boxes and listened with the original first-order crossovers intact. I had to shave a bit of the corners off the mounting-screw bosses on the front baffle (pic 1) so the 5FE120 frames would seat on the baffle without interference, and used longer #8 x1/2" screws. First impression: Wow. Tight, articulate, neutral, smooth. No boominess, no harshness from cone breakup. Just articulate and smooth. But still overwhelming the tweeter. So, I went to work: modeling clay damping on the speaker baskets and molded plastic baffle. 2nd order highpass on the tweeter, 4th order lowpass on the woofer, modeling clay and felt damping in the cast-aluminum cabinets, thick felt on the top surface around the tweeter, cork pads to support the top screen cage above the tweeter, maple t-brace across sides and to back, with modeling clay coupling to the 5FE120 motor.Sat back and listened, and listened way too late, because these speakers hadbecome something I never expected.Summary:1. Best money I ever spent on a 5"-class mid-woofer.2. These would be a very competent mid-range driver in any high-end system.3. Low distortion, very articulate, well-controlled breakup, smooth.4. Very usable, tightly controlled bass performance in it's size class.5. If you're even thinking about them, just buy them. No regrets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent in my 3 way systemMy wife pulled a pair of huge Fisher 3 way speakers out of the trash. They looked and sounded awful. I gutted the speakers, and decided on these as the mids. I matched them with the Mach One woofer replacements (290-184, 15 inch woofers!) and the phenolic ring tweeters (270-252). When I bought them there were no reviews to look over. I chose these because the sensitivity rating was a good match with the other two components. I put it all together and the result is awesome. These speakers really sound excellent. The sound is spacious and detailed. I thought the woofers would overpower the rest of the system, but these hold their own. Great mids.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bang for the buckIf you are looking for 5" mid-woofers in this price range, just buy them! I've been building speakers for almost 10 years, worked on over 20 designs and this little 5" woofer is a gem. It's clean, clear, has wonderful tone and handles power without distortion. I'm using them as replacement woofs in an Optimus Pro X55AV pair and they sound great. (If you do this or something similar, put a 2 ohm resister on the tweeter to tame it down and the speakers will sound much more natural.) Just so you know, I have very expensive ears, have been around music all my life, done studio work, and currently produce the music and voice for a radio show. I've used several 5" midwoofers in speaker designs and none of them compare to these little babies. Just buy them, you'll be glad you did.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Smooth Mids decent bass. Replacement for Pro-LX5IIBought 2 of these as replacements for the dry-rotted woofers in old Optimus Pro-LX5 IIs. The screw holes are a tiny bit tight but work fine with no modifications. The rest of the dimensions are perfect. They sound fine with the original cross-over too. I haven't measured the frequency response and I'm sure it's not perfect, and the crossover could use a total rework,, BUT,, as a whole, the speakers sound better, tighter, smoother then the speakers did with the original woofers. I think there is less boom in the bass which means these woofers probably have a lower Q then the originals and are better suited for a 4.4 liter box.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Replacement for Optimus 77 SpeakerI saw the review that said it was a good replacement for the Minimus 77 which is exactly what I was trying to do. Hard to find a driver that fit. Anyway, purchased and received two days later, modified the mounting holes a little to fit the original pattern (yeah, about 15 minutes) installed and tested. They sound better than the original drivers at low and high volume levels.

This speaker will work for the application but the dimensions are slightly different. This requires a 4.4" cutout and the mounting holes are 5.25" on center.
