ESS Heil Air Motion Transformer AMT Tweeter
Has anyone designed a 2-way x-over design using the Heil Air Transformer?
I will tell you I believe the absolute best way to crossover is with a digital crossover and biamp. Biamping has so many advantages. One is you use less amplifier power. A 75 watt and 35 watt per channel will give the same output as a 150 watt per channel with passive components. With electronic crossovers you are dealing with low voltage and do not have to use inductors. The other big advantage is the output of the amp is hooked directly up to the voice coil. I am currently evaluating a Nad four channel amp with 35 watts per channel. It sells at Crutchfields for $599 dollars. If you combine it with a 150-250 watt bass amp you get quite a package. This allows for a three way system or a two way with sub or subs. Other advantages are two drivers of different efficiencies can easily be matched. One of the best advantages is the full damping factor of the amp is controlling the speaker motion. Transients are noticeably quicker . With a digital crossover you can adjust the slops and not get phase shifts as with passive or active analogue crossover. The Heil units are expensive ant an electronic crossover protects the tweeter from clipping distortion. When a passive crossover see clipping from the amp the amp generates square waves at the higher frequencies. This will destroy any tweeter. The electronic crossover will not do this. There are many other advantages to electronic crossovers but suffice to say they sound far better. I do not recommend a passive crossover for the heil because of how low it can be crossed and how critical the ear is at those frequencies.

How does one "polarize" these speakers?
How can you tell when the diaphragm is moving forward, ie to have polarity correct and in phase with other drivers? Does color of leads give guidance?
Purple is plus, according to the bulk of the evidence on the web.

Can I use the ESS Heil AMT to replace the horn tweeter in my Klipsch Heresys?
If yes, would I need to reconfigure the crossovers (Bob Crites replacements of the originals) or would the ESS Heils AMTs be a simple "drop in"?Any and all opinions, thoughts are welcome.MTIAHarry FreibergBrookings, OR
Hello,Not an easy answer.Yes you can, and you will gain a lot in terms of refinement. But this is not gonna be plug and play!you will have far less efficiency with the ESS, which means you will need to rajust the level, and/or move to biamplification. The ESS is 95dB/w at 4 ohms. The horn driver of the Heresy may reach 100dB/wOn the other hand, the ESS will be easier to filter and to drive. But you will have to redesign the filter.Good luck

How many radiating panels in the ESS AMT tweeter: one, or four?
In looking at the views shown, it's very difficult to tell if the radiating element is at the center of the tweeter, or, are there a pair of radiating panels on either side of the center gap, both on front, and back, so there would be a total of four radiating panels. Please clarify. On e-bay, views there appear to show a pair of folded silver panel either side of the narrow vertical "slit", both front and rear. Comparing so called "vintage" units would seem to indicate current production has black anodised radiating panels instead of silver. Thank you.
To answer your question there is only one membrane. The heil tweeter works with the magnetic grates on the front and rear of the pleated diaphragm. The front is North and the rear is South or vice verso. The diaphragm is folded into pleated sections and the audio signal runs up and down the pleats this is what causes the squeezing motion of the bellow like membrane. There is no voice coil and no rise in inductance. The unit is almost purely resistive. Low mass and large radiating area equals low distortion and stored energy. Hope this helps thanks Ralph

Does it come with mounting brackets?
I am unsure what they ship with. Call PE, the original Heils were amazing.

can the ESS Heil Air Motion Transformer AMT Tweeter be used in a three way system/crossover? Using a crossover from a pair od pioneer DSS-10E's.
If you have never listened to a pair of the Heil transformers you are open for a shock. They are the ultimate for acoustic instrument reproduction and great at amplfied instruments. This is because the vibrate much like the sound box of an acoustic instrument.Your Pioneer 10E speakers are cloth/ paper cones and have a good responce time characteristic. I think the mid crossover frequency is 800 Hz. If this is accurate, I would consider using it as a mid tweeter. If not then replace the tweeter, except I would mount it on top of the box. I have not heard your pioneers since the mid 1980's, but they should compliment each other. Remember, Heil created these over 30 years ago and they continue to remain one the best in reproduction.I know a band with a very good fiddle player. They added 4 (2 per side) to their FOH pa and the fiddle is unbelievable. Prior through the horn it was screatchy notes, now it is great. My advice is yes, and you will love the end result.
