Electric guitars, guitar amplification, and the birth of Rock-n-Roll in the 1950's collectively established a new use for loudspeakers. Speaker choices were limited in those days and amplifier manufacturers had to purchase products that were common to other applications. Usually, this meant a low-power speaker, often with an Alnico magnet, and limited cone and coil travel.

Due to the nature of the speaker's construction, the sound of the guitar and amplifier combination was impacted by the speaker design. Amplified guitar was a bit more aggressive duty than most other speaker applications at the time and the speakers were frequently challenged in terms of their mechanical movement and linearity. Guitarist learned how to control this non-linearity and use the resulting tonal characteristics to their advantage. Speaker break-up became cool and was a desired feature by most guitarists. The great guitar tones we know now are a result of those events.

Although there are a multitude of distinctive guitar speaker tones available today, they can be broken down into two main categories. We have Marshall and Celestion to thank for the distinctively "British tones" that we are so familiar with. Fender, Peavey, and SLM (Crate/Ampeg) worked with speaker companies like Eminence, Oxford, CTS, JBL, and Electro-Voice to establish tones that are distinctively "American".

Eminence is proud to present the Patriot™ and Red Coat™ series of guitar speakers. Incorporating both British and American cone technology into speakers that are manufactured in the USA gives us the ability to provide you with virtually any tone you desire. Be it British or American, clean or dirty, big bass or screaming highs, we have a speaker that will allow you to "Pick Your Sound".

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor choice for open back combo ampsI do not doubt the great reviews of this speaker being used in a 4x12 configuration however, in an open back 1x12 combo amp that you want to use even moderate distortion; this is not the speaker for you. The sound quickly becomes so harsh that it is of little use. The tone break up is so quick on its own and to use it in a 1x12 open back configuration just accentuates this quality. With a 4x12 closed back you would get some dampening of the cone and you would be dividing the power to the 4 speakers, allowing a more gradual break up of the tone. I would think this would be a good setting for this particular speaker with light distortion or overdriving the speaker on a clean setting to get the distortion. The latter would be very loud though as the speakers are very efficient but I imagine would sound great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than celestions for guitarists with tubesThanks to Parts Express for being a reputable company! They provide the technical information you need to make informed decisions. Look at the specs for these speakers. You ll see that they have that famous midrange honk that many deaf guitarists mistake for tone. The fact is, these speakers are superior to Celestions for less money. If you like Celestions, you ll love these! Check the sensitivity rating to see why they sound loud. Check the frequency response to see why they have that character that guitarists like. (It is a very non-linear response curve with pronounce mids and a slight high-end tweak.) Guitarists like this type of response curve because, (in a 16 ohm, 4-12 cabinet) the speakers and cabinet interact with tube amps. Hot tube-amps like Marshall need to see 16 ohms to dampen low frequencies. Tube amps behave more musically when they push a reactive load. It s the combination of high-power tube amps with honkin midrange speakers in a gang of 4 at 16 ohms that create the British sound. There is no mystery. So, IF you have a vintage 50 or 100 watt tube-amp, and IF you have a 4-12 cabinet, and IF you believe that marketing hype about celestions, THEN, save money and get a better speaker like these. Parts Express has a low price and great service. Even if the price were the same elsewhere, I would still buy them here because only Parts Express makes the effort to publish critical information about these products on their website. Don t believe the Celestion myth. Jim Marshall used them because they are cheap. He was a manufacturer trying to make a buck. When selecting speakers, his main concern was price, not quality. There is no magic in Celestions. That myth started because so many rock guitarists want to be LOUD, and a 100 watt tube-head with a 4-12 cab is LOUD. You ll get more for your money with these. They honk bark and growl in the way rock guitarists love, especially in 4-12 cabinets with a vintage tube amp.
