Electric guitars, guitar amplification, and the birth of Rock-n-Roll in the 1950's collectively established a new use for loudspeakers. Speaker choices were limited in those days and amplifier manufacturers had to purchase products that were common to other applications. Usually, this meant a low-power speaker, often with an Alnico magnet, and limited cone and coil travel.

Due to the nature of the speaker's construction, the sound of the guitar and amplifier combination was impacted by the speaker design. Amplified guitar was a bit more aggressive duty than most other speaker applications at the time and the speakers were frequently challenged in terms of their mechanical movement and linearity. Guitarist learned how to control this non-linearity and use the resulting tonal characteristics to their advantage. Speaker break-up became cool and was a desired feature by most guitarists. The great guitar tones we know now are a result of those events.

Although there are a multitude of distinctive guitar speaker tones available today, they can be broken down into two main categories. We have Marshall and Celestion to thank for the distinctively "British tones" that we are so familiar with. Fender, Peavey, and SLM (Crate/Ampeg) worked with speaker companies like Eminence, Oxford, CTS, JBL, and Electro-Voice to establish tones that are distinctively "American".

Eminence is proud to present the Patriot™ and Red Coat™ series of guitar speakers. Incorporating both British and American cone technology into speakers that are manufactured in the USA gives us the ability to provide you with virtually any tone you desire. Be it British or American, clean or dirty, big bass or screaming highs, we have a speaker that will allow you to "Pick Your Sound".

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Emi Lil Buddy and Governor tooEminence Governor and Lil Buddy GTR spkrs.hello musicians...i address this review to those who CAN hearsmall differences, and who Dare to try different things...today, we took the epiphone Dot studio geetar, withthe tiny vox ac4tv mini Tubes amp...to test outaround 15 different eminence speakers !the above is based on the sweet, bloom sound ofEL 84 tube... and that is what we aimed to get...a bit MORE than the internal 6 inch speaker, which is, actually, quite nice on its own too !but on the Backside, i saw a speaker connectionfor 16 ohms...mmmmconclusion first...I chose the Governor, AND the Lil Buddy.yes, a red and a blue...!we are gonna make 2 separate boxes, and allowseries connection so they add up to 16 ohms...OR, be played individually at 8 ohms..there is Quite a difference between the above 2spkrs in sound, however, surprisingly, whenConnected Together in seriesand played back with the above equipment IN CLEANMODE, the sounds are simply AMAZINGLY accurateand Dream like ! can put one in a trance !so, GO ahead, and try out various eminence and otherspkrs combinations too ... u will be surprised !the next bests, which i liked for the slow slowjazzy type , are :private jacktonespotterso, ,there you have itone man's test results in a compressed form !thanks for reading andalways have fun or Joy !k

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is what it is but it's really good.OK this is the deal with this speaker. It's part of an excellent line of 10 inch speakers made by Eminence. Each one is voiced differently. I do have most of them in one amp or another because I build small amps. Just SE 5-10 watt Champ type amps. I bought this speaker specifically for one amp I built, it's for slide guitar. This speaker did exactly what I expected. The highs were slightly attenuated which was what I wanted and the mids were thick and kind of barked at you, which was also what I wanted. For lack of a better description it's almost like a 12" speaker, similar to a more British sound (Celesetion)than American. The Brit sound is more of that midrange bark as opposed to the more American (Jensen)smooth highs and scooped mids. I'm guessing but usually you get that with a heavier paper material for the cone, hence the hemp cone's effect and the larger 1.75 inch voice coil. I guess Eminence was after the Tone Tubby sound, whether they achieved that or not, I don't know I never used a Tone Tubby. This will thicken up a bright midrange deficient amp and would probably work well in a multi mixed speaker cabinet maybe with a Red Fang. Like all speakers it has a voice, if not used in the right amp I can see people not appreciating the Lil' Buddy. It is what it is, it will add midrange and attenuate highs in whatever amp you put it in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You got to try this!A bold sounding speaker, you think it is a 12", with late breakup and smooth top end, I stuffed mine in a 66' Princeton Reverb,I can not think of a more interesting combination of amp and speaker. Two days delivery for FREE, how can you beat that

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Specialty Speaker For SureWarm, dark speaker lacking high end. Maybe useful in tandem with other brighter speakers or to tame a shrill amp, but definitely not the ticket for a 1x10 combo, unless you're a harp player (would be great for that). Also, don't think you're saving money and getting the same speaker as Tubby ceramic 10. The 'Buddy' has a smaller magnet and a much larger dome which rolls off highs. The TT is much more full-range/bright.
