Electric guitars, guitar amplification, and the birth of Rock-n-Roll in the 1950's collectively established a new use for loudspeakers. Speaker choices were limited in those days and amplifier manufacturers had to purchase products that were common to other applications. Usually, this meant a low-power speaker, often with an Alnico magnet, and limited cone and coil travel.

Due to the nature of the speaker's construction, the sound of the guitar and amplifier combination was impacted by the speaker design. Amplified guitar was a bit more aggressive duty than most other speaker applications at the time and the speakers were frequently challenged in terms of their mechanical movement and linearity. Guitarist learned how to control this non-linearity and use the resulting tonal characteristics to their advantage. Speaker break-up became cool and was a desired feature by most guitarists. The great guitar tones we know now are a result of those events.

Although there are a multitude of distinctive guitar speaker tones available today, they can be broken down into two main categories. We have Marshall and Celestion to thank for the distinctively "British tones" that we are so familiar with. Fender, Peavey, and SLM (Crate/Ampeg) worked with speaker companies like Eminence, Oxford, CTS, JBL, and Electro-Voice to establish tones that are distinctively "American".

Eminence is proud to present the Patriot™ and Red Coat™ series of guitar speakers. Incorporating both British and American cone technology into speakers that are manufactured in the USA gives us the ability to provide you with virtually any tone you desire. Be it British or American, clean or dirty, big bass or screaming highs, we have a speaker that will allow you to "Pick Your Sound".

Eminence Patriot Cannabis Rex 12" Guitar Speaker 8 Ohm
Eminence Patriot Cannabis Rex 12" Guitar Speaker 8 Ohm is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eminence Canabis RexOverall, great sounding transparent speaker. In the features rating I only gave it average as it is a speaker and has no features other than being a speaker.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Used in a 5E3 CircuitI wanted a very efficient speaker to maximize the volume of my 5E3 circuit for use in my band. The bottom end is big on this speaker, but tight. The high end is nice, not too brittle and painful, but still enough to roll-off the tone knob on the my Tele's bridge a tad.Sounds great with slide , too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Big SoundThis is my 2nd C-Rex and I love them. They make every amp I've tried them in sound "bigger"102db sensitivity makes it one of the most efficient speakers out there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Speaker for Warm TonePeople that give this a bad review 1) aren't reading the product description, 2) Don't know how to break in a speaker. Any new speaker needs break-in time before it sounds good, hemp cones need more than usual. I blast a cd player through a PA amp and let it run for 2 days straight to break them in. The sound changes dramatically after break in, as it will with any speaker. If you are looking for a shrill "glassy" ceramic Jensen or Celestion tone, look elsewhere. This speaker does one thing and does it better than any other: Warm. Not that there aren't highs, there are plenty, but it takes the objectionable "ice pick" effect right out of the sound. Some amps like Marshalls desperately need this. Warm, non-flubby lows, lots of midrange to cut a mix. Its also very sensitive, meaning that going from your old Greenbacks to these will give you 5-6Db, which is like going from a 15 watt amp to a 60 watt amp. I originally put one in my Blues Junior. That, along with the Maple Cabinet I bought for it, negated any need for circuit changes. It went from boxy and small sounding to big and boutique. I've since sold all my other speakers and replaced them with these, except for a couple EVM12Ls to handle high power. Considering street price on Chinese made Celestions is about $30 more and up, and these are made in the US, the value is a no-brainer.If you have high end hearing loss and need to make your audience squint and turn their heads with icepick highs to feel like your sound is 'bright' enough, get something else. If you want a warm tone that cuts a mix and lets you turn up without your audience leaving the room or the bar owner telling you to turn the *#$% down, try one. Just remember to break it in.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too harsh in midrangeTried this in a VOX tube amp. Nasty! Not the good kind.Is everybody at Eminence deaf? This thing is loud, but WAY unbalanced. The sensitivity at 2k to 3k is horrendous, offensive, unmusical.Somebody tell those boys to wear hearing protection on the factory floor and turn down the TV at home. Hanging around noisy sports bars can't be good for your hearing either.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beware of SmokeGot this thinking that the 'smokey' description might be what I was looking for...wrong. Not that the description didn't warn me. It was a real solid speaker, with tight low end and mids and a present high-end. However, over all the spectrum hung this 'smokey' haze that I couldn't get past. One session playing it in my Blues Junior and I was packing it back up for an exchange. It single handedly undid all the billm mods that effected brightness and balance of tone.If you have a too bright set up and want to tame it a bit, or are into a 'smokey' tone then the Cannabis Rex is a candidate. It was a good sounding speaker, just not what I was looking for. (Did I mention it was 'smokey'?)
